who out there can cut a jug choke?

to all, in theory, i should have a 46"10ga rayl barrel soon for my chambers new england fowler. i would like to have this gun ready for spring turkey season but, the gentleman who lives near me in IA and jug chokes won't be able to cut it untill spring. who else out there can cut them, and how tight can you make them? thank guys. :hmm:

CoyoteJoe did a fine job working a jug into my T/C New Englander's barrel.

Mine throws between Imp. Cyl & Modified (about Sheet #2, or 55%) which is just what I asked for. Don't know how tight they can potentially go.

After getting a real good helpful e mail of CJ I made my own mandril and cut jug chokes in my pedersoli. It worked a treat, thanks CJ :hatsoff:

yeah, i'm not a machinist. it would be intersting to know how it's done though.

Nor me but have access to an old lathe that I had to make my own tools for and a bench drill oh and a grinder. I used a wet stone to finnish the cutting edge.
The cutter was a small old file ground to shape of the choke I wanted and adjustable for depth of cut.
Takes alot of cranking per cut but is well worth it.

If you have a lot of time and patience you can hone a jug choke using a brake cylinder hone and an electric drill. But be prepared, it took me four hours and three sets of stones to get 15 points of choke (that is .015 inches of diameter change.) If I am correct a full choke is 40 points ( .040 ) You can buy a hone at most auto parts stores for less than $20.00 and sets of stones for about $5.00 a set.

Also did you send the entire gun to coyote or just the barrel?

so accuracy was the same as before??? I use the canister type shot wraps with the seasoned paper and also mix the shot with extra ground cornmeal and it flys pretty tight..

can some of you post up what size shot you use and what the size of the pattern is at a certain distance with the jug choke?

Sir you can have any amount of jug choke.
I did my right IIRC about .010" above the .719 it measured, testing after reveald a pattern just a bit tighter than the cylinder target shot before.

The left barrel I cut IIRC .019" over the .718 it measured and patterning was showing moderated type patterns.

I did not shoot ball from this gun.

Hardly an exhaustive test, but just before regular deer season I took my jug choked New Englander out and had three round balls along just for giggles. Two at 40 yards and one at 50 yards and together they make a 3-1/4" group. Not bad for standing offhand without sights.

Definately worth more trials. I don't remember it shooting round balls this well before, but it's been many years since I tried. This was a 12 bore with 0.690" ball, 80 gr FFg and 0.018" Moose Snot lubed patch.

accuracy with the round ball was pretty much the same from my 20ga. with shot it was night and day.

before the choke, 1 oz of #71/2 over 60gr swiss 2F
was all in a 30" circle at 25yrds, in other words a perfect cylinder bore pattern.

after a .020" jug choke, it's more like a modified or even improved modified, the same load produced aabout a 12-14" pattern at 25 yrds. the same with my pheasant load of 1 1/4 oz of copper plated #4 over 80gr swiss 2F.

i'm hoping that coyote joe can cut a much, tighter choke in a 10ga. actually since it's exclusivly for turkey as tight as he can possibly cut it.

I've sent you a PM with all info but in general this is a great time of year to get it done. I have no work and it's too dang cold to have any fun outdoors so I'm sure I can get it done and back to you within two weeks. There just is nothing one can do with loads that will make so much difference as a choke. I consider full choke to be a mistake for 90% of general shotgun use but for turkey, with carefully aimed shots on stationary or slow moving targets, it is hard to beat a full choke.
There is a limit as to how tight it can be made to pattern. It is quite possible to over-choke to the point that it actually ruins the pattern. The normal standard for full choke is to put 70% of the pellets inside a 30" circle at 40 yards. That standard was established with black powder.
Modern shotshells with progressive burning smokeless powder and plastic shotcups can easily get close to 90% patterns, but with black powder and conventional wad columns anything over 70% is gravy.
