I do recall with my Bess that I felt the blast and heat - especially with a brimmed hat! That had a huge pan and vent hole.

I really don't notice a flash. Big cloud of smoke for sure, but I'm concentrating on the target until it disappears.

You're not alone.
This topic was raised some time in the past and until then I had never even given it a thought. I didn't notice, so it never occurred to me to notice.
Then I read about how people DID take note and guess what? I had to train myself to ignore the elephant in the corner of the room. :cursing:
Now I'm much better (twitch twitch) :rotf:

I dont notice it. I am trying to shoot more so I get over the flinching. It is fun learning!!

While still being fairly new to flintlocks, I guess i don't notice the flash that much, but what gets me is the sound of the flint striking the frizzen....."CLACK". I love the sound, but its hard not flinch.

snipped. . . . Every now and then I'll let someone else at the range shoot it, and I'll stand so I can watch the pan flash/muzzle flash in a single view and its amazing to see the ML appear to go off as a single event..cool stuff.

Hey Roundball,
You likely you saw these before, but just in case here is the 15,000 fps video of a rifle igniting. You can see the pan flash, barrel ignite and then the ball exit the muzzle. At 15,000 fps you wait and wait for stuff to happen. But, when you see the jet coming out of the vent, look quickly at the muzzle or you might miss the ball. On a good screen you can see the patch twist slightly as it peals off.

Rifle at 15,000 fps

How much powder?
It appears the gases are cooled at the vent, no fire escaping, before the ball clears the muzzle.

Hi Dan,
Take another look. At 15,000 fps the pan smoke is almost cleared, then look for the jet from the vent. A few lazy sparks show first and then a pronounced jet. Then look to the muzzle for the ball.
I don't remember the charge. Since we were working in the garage, I'd guess it wasn't a full load. My guess would be 15-20 gr fffg with a .40 caliber.

Pletch
