Skwerrils is why I joined P.E.T.A. People Eating Tasty Animals. I hates em and loves em. I hate when I am deer or turkey hunting, and they are sitting above me chattering away. So I love to hunt them, with my stevens crackshot 22, or my Charlville with 80 gr. of no. 6's. Put six in the freezer yesterday, and sent the tails off to Mepps, for the quarter bounty they pay. It actually pays to hunt them. :haha:

quater bounty where do i signe up finaly found a job i like now mabey i can justify my squirrel thing to my frends

Squirrels were the first things I ever hunted... unless you include rats that used to get in the corn crib. My dad used to take me out in the woods with an empty single shot .410 and when we saw a squirrel in range, he would hand me a shell. He taught me two things on our little hunting excursions. One is to treat a gun safely and the second is that it only takes one shot to kill something so make it count. We didn't get to go very often, but I sure enjoyed it when we did. He finally started letting me go on my own. I loved that little .410. I plan on teaching my kids to hunt with it the same way. It'll be a few years because my oldest child is 6. I am really looking forward to it. I would love to try hunting squirrel with BP. The .58 cal is just a bit big for that though. Guess I have a good excuse to buy a new muzzleloader.

Same here!

Another good idea not to try is climbing up in the big 'ol oak to get a closer look at the baby flying squirrels. Also, don't hold on to a limb with one hand and reach in the nest with the other. And while you're at it, don't let go with the hand your holdin the limb with to pry the little critter off your other hand. Don't ask me how I know!

Squirrel huntin is great. I usually wind up dropping a few while picking pecans along the Lampasses river with the little lady. I also use the tails for tying flies! :redthumb:

Nuttin like a Muddler tied with gray squirrel over red squirrel underwing and a spun deer hair head. Some oak-mottled turkey for the overwing & tail if the hunt gods have been really good to you. ::

Mmmmmmmm. Flyfishing for smallmouth bass. Mmmmmmmmm.

As several have mentioned squirrels were the first thing I hunted and my Father was the person who introduced me to the wonderful sport of hunting.

I have to be honest and say that I look more forward to opening day of squirrel season in May than I do deer season in November or bow season in September.

I hunt them about half the time with a scoped, Ruger 77/22....my eyes ain't what they used to be!!! Once I get a few in the freezer I get real serious and chase them with a 36 Southern Mountain flinter which is by far my most favorite hunting of all. If I really want to up the ante I take my longobow squirrel hunting. Good thing I don't have to live off the squirrels I kill with my bow!!!!

Squirrel hunting ranks right up there with bear hunting. I'll go so far as to say that if I were forced to choose one game animal I could hunt it would be squirrels. After bear hunting, rabbit hunting with a brace of good Beagles would be close but I'd have to take squirrels. They're just sooo plentiful, can be a real challange and nothing tastes any better than a fried, young gray squirrel. Also, as another poster said, I use their tails for tying flies. What a wonderful little varmint God has blessed us with!
