As several have mentioned squirrels were the first thing I hunted and my Father was the person who introduced me to the wonderful sport of hunting.
I have to be honest and say that I look more forward to opening day of squirrel season in May than I do deer season in November or bow season in September.
I hunt them about half the time with a scoped, Ruger 77/22....my eyes ain't what they used to be!!! Once I get a few in the freezer I get real serious and chase them with a 36 Southern Mountain flinter which is by far my most favorite hunting of all. If I really want to up the ante I take my longobow squirrel hunting. Good thing I don't have to live off the squirrels I kill with my bow!!!!
Squirrel hunting ranks right up there with bear hunting. I'll go so far as to say that if I were forced to choose one game animal I could hunt it would be squirrels. After bear hunting, rabbit hunting with a brace of good Beagles would be close but I'd have to take squirrels. They're just sooo plentiful, can be a real challange and nothing tastes any better than a fried, young gray squirrel. Also, as another poster said, I use their tails for tying flies. What a wonderful little varmint God has blessed us with!
