Why I only use cool water to clean.

I would bet that water, weather hot or cold has been the go too cleaner of blackpowder guns from the begining. I've been shooting muzzleloaders for almost 40 years, I have always cleaned with soapy water, then flushed with boiling water and let the barrel dry, then run lubed patches when cool. I was taught to do it this way from the old timers, it ain't broke so I don't fix it. The only difference is today I use either RO or distilled water for the boiling water part.

There thinking was water left in the barrel was a bad thing, thats why boiling water was used as a final rinse, the heat from the boiling water would get the barrel hot and would cause the water to evaporate inside the barrel.
