No, this needs to be a Trek back into time with *gasp* more content than commercials.

We were involved in filming one a few years ago. It was sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and aired on OLN (out west). It featured myself and several other buddies on a trek in the MT woods in February. We did hunt squirrels as the regular hunting season was closed. From the people who saw it, it was well recieved and we hoped it wouldn't be the last. But all of this costs money, and without advertisers or sponsors, it is very difficult to find funding.

Where can this video be found or is it no longer available? Thats why I say dedicated famous people, they should be able to generate funding through donations and moneys from venders. I would think anyways.

The DVD I have is labeled as follows:
Elk Country Journal
2007 Show #74
Ancient Skills
Air Date: 03/06/07
House # 41877

You may be able to get more info on availability at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation: http://www.rmef.org/ OR http://www.rmef.org/Footer/ContactUs/

In order to do a hunting show, you have to:
have obnoxious rock music guitar playing loudly in the background;
give loud yahoos and pump the air with your fist and otherwise make an a** of yourself when you make a shot or kill;
hunt from a tree stand or a ground blind.
That lets most of us out who use and appreciate traditional gear.

Don't forget gut-shot. The last couple of shows I've seen, I'll bet every deer or pig shot was hit too far back for my thinking.

(Sarcasm on) I must admit that I am especially fond of the hunting that happens from the elevated "Port-A-Potties" with the heaters and electric lighting (sarcasm off)....

This has been my first ever forum topic posted! I have thoroughly enjoyed the responces to the question, I will have to research puting a hunt like that together. Figuring out which state would have the most successful hunts?, tages availability, etc.,etc.. It would be great to see a buffalo or a elk hunt on film, without all the commercials! it would be a tough sell to all the big sponsores for sure!

I saw a show the other day that had traditional sidelocks in it. They were in Alaska hunting those blacktail deer and one of the guys had a caplock lyman gpr and he got a little buck with it in a steady rain. The other guy had a bolt action rifle. I was so surprised when I saw that.

It's more cost effective to hunt from one of those elevated houses.......you don't need the third person to carry the shootin stick.

The problem is, in order to get you to watch their 20 minute commercial showing the same thing over and over and hopefully get you to by it, they need to hunt some Ranch and get a big deer every week for everyone to drool over. Theres to room for failure.

This isn't exactly the best way to sell a Primative hunt, that sells history more than anything and may end up with no harvest. Thats not so bad, as I like to see the hunt from a foot more than anything and nothing needs to be havested. Unfortunately when it comes to TV, that does not sell.

Hi a number of years ago The show (Kentucky Afield) did a show with some local Men doing a Primitive Squirrel hunt, They were in period Clothing 1770s, and used their Flint long rifles and smoothbores. That episode was the most asked for rerun they had ever had, so they did a follow up sometime later. I guess all the Right people have to get to gether to make it work :hmm:

This reminds me of a show several years ago. Possibly put on by the turkey people, can't remember there name. Anyway they had Ron Ehlert hunting turkeys with a fine double flinter that he had made up. So they call in a gobbler for him & he, for what ever reason, misses the thing & that's the end of the show. Right when it happened I thought that the sponsers couldn't have wrote it up any better. You'll set there & watch the same sort of show & the dude or little blond cutie with the modern zip gun will from time to time miss. Right after the commercial for the gun that did the missing they come back & a big monster falls the next day. But with a hand made, non sponser firearm, it's game over, you should have brought something with you that would actually kill something. I will say that I felt sorrow for Ron, he didn't deserve this sort of thing. Looking back on it I can't help but wonder if he had dropped the bird if it would ever have been shown at all?

Paul
