I have stopped trying to find a pistol to match my rifle so I have decided to build my own. I am fairly new at building guns and will be posting a lot of newbie questions so please bare with me. My first questions is will a lock with the measurements of 5-1/16" x 5/8" fit into a lock mortice area of 5 3/4" x 1 5/8"?
I must assume your reading some description of a lock and a stock.
If this is true, the direct answer is no.
A mortice that is 5 3/4 long is much too big for a lock that is only 5 1/16 long and I would question a mortice that is 1 5/8.
This dimension is usually the height of the lockplate and very few are that large.
Getting down to basics, even if some written description said the mortice was 5 1/16 long X 5/8, the same dimensions you gave for the lock, the chance of a lock fitting is slim and none unless you know that the mortice was made for exactly THAT lock.
This is because simply having the same general dimensions does not mean the shape is the same.
Now, if the stock was inletted for a "Large Siler" and you bought a Large Siler lock it would probably come close to fitting.
Even then, some wood removal is usually required to get the exact fit that a well made gun deserves.
That is why the pre-carved stocks that folks buy from the suppliers like Pecatonica River, Chambers, Track of the Wolf etc require some hand fitting to get the lock installed.
Hope this answers your question.
