I've been wanting to get a peep sight to go on my CVA Hawken. The ones from Williams say they'll fit the dovetails on CVA octagon barrel, but judging from the pics i've seen i'm not sure how. i just want to replace the rear sight w/o cutting or drilling. is there somthing i'm missing that will allow it to do this, or are there other "drop in" options for a rear peep sight? btw- here's a pic from midway's website

i did a search, but didn't see this particular question asked. if it's a repost, i apologize.

If you put a peep that far down the barrel you are going to have a hard time seeing through that small hole. That is why they are mounted on the tang, so they are close to the eye so you can see through the small peep hole.

I just put peep sights on my Leman 50 and 54 from track of the wolf. It is more period corect and looks darn nice on your muzzlestuffer.
It has a two inch tang that you tap in to your barrel with the peep going back to your breech plug. Very!! sharp

agree that a peep sight should be mounted on the tang..I put a stevens on my T/C...just a little tap and die work...Hank

What Rebel said. However, there are a few solutions to poor eyesight and small peep sight holes. They make larger diameter peeps that you can put on. My solution was when I ordered an extra barrel for my Underhammer, I had them cut the dovetail 5" in front of the receiver bringing it closer. Also purchased a larger diameter peep sight. I suppose you could have your barrel cut with another dovetail and put a blank in the original dovetail for a cleaner look.

Here is what I ended up with when I did my underhammer barrel for a peep. Not PC by any means but it works well on the range and I hope to harvest a nice deer with it next season.

Also these guys make an adjustible peep sight. adjustable peep sights
I've never used these.

I have used an adjustable peep sights by another company when I use to shoot small bore competion. They work well.

Is this the one?

Does it interfere with barrel removal for cleaning as indicated in the catalog?

Yes, the sight overhangs the breech and would not allow a hook breech to lift up to unhook. To retain the benefits of a hook breech a sight has to be mounted either ahead of or behind the joint.
I have a Williams Guide peep on a Lyman Trade Rifle mounted on the breech, just ahead of the nipple bolster. That does require drilling and tapping holes but it is well worth it, a peep is in every way preferable to open sights but it must me properly mounted to get the benefit. Close to the eye is the whole point. The Lyman and T/C peeps mounted on the tang are also fine sights, easily adjusted and properly located. It is also much less "scary" to drill and tap a tang rrather than a barrel!

just picked up the pictured sight for my .32, i'll let you know how it works out.

One like the one pictured was designed by Dale Story and is mounted on the tang instead of the barrel. I believe the extra length is designed to be trimmed to work to best advantage on your tang. Doug

If you look at my last post, that is a WDOS sight. Works great. :hatsoff:

Ya G but it's not a true peep, I think he wants one back at the eye. Your way may work with the bar I made I'll have to try that out when I get some time. I think it was TOW that has the dove tail with a bar comeing back some inchs?? fred :hatsoff:

i'm basically looking for a peep sight i can install w/o drilling, filing or tapping for new screws(a "drop in" as it were). i know there are globe/aperture sights for the front that will mount w/no problem and was hoping to find a rear peep to go with them. would maybe a larger sized globe sight and the WDOS mentioned in slamfire's post produce a reasonable facsimile of a rear peep that would require no gunsmithing to install/function well?

i do appreciate all of the input, but i feel i must clarify something. i want to do this w/o any cutting/drilling/screw tapping.....etc. if i can't get it done by tapping things into the current dovetails and holes while keeping all of the current wood, then i would rather not do it. i know it just a CVA Hawken that ain't worth much moneywise, but there is more than a few memories in it for me and i don't want to go drilling/sawing on it. that's the kicker. i've seen several sight systems that would work excellent, but they'd require more modification of the gun than i am comfortable with.

Actually an aperature part way down the barrel make a pretty fair sight, the Marines used them on Springfields at the beginning of WWII, and the Japanese on the Type 99 Arisakas at the end. You do need bright sunlight though, as semidarkness makes the hole disappear. :(

how, and where did you get your apature peep to mount on WDOS?? All I could find was blade open sight ?

You might want to look up "looy pop sight" on here a few months back, someplace? Ive seen a sight bar that will fit and comes back to around the tang you just drill and screw on the sight of your choice, and does nothing to your rifle Fred :hatsoff: GMWWs would work if you ad some lenght to it.

Drilling a couple of holes in the tang is hardly distructive to the gun, but if you're unwilling to do that then I think you'll just have to get along without a peep sight. Williams open sight mounts to the barrel with an insert that slides into the original dovetail slot and a screw passes through the sight base into the dovetail insert. You can get a peep blade to replace the open notch blade but that forgoes all advantage of a peep.
With a peep mounted close to the eye, you just look through it and see your front bead in sharp focus against the world. You have a wide and unobstructed field of view with sharper focus through the aperature. When the aperature is too far away there is no sharpening of focus and it blocks even more of the view than an open notch would do.
The U.S. Army went to peep sights with the 1917 Enfield and never looked back.

williams sells the peep adapter to fit the wdos. the only drawback is the large diameter target aperatures won't fit. takes williams and lyman aperatures.
