Wood for Spontoon?

I was wondering what is a good wood for making a Spontoon for the Rev War? Oak, Ash? ETC?

Hickory would be #1, ash #2, maple #3 in my book. Oak is splintery sometimes (especially red oaks). Split-out rather than sawn hickory would be perfect.
