Would a cal 44 remington 1858 do the job?

I will add: do not let any of this discourage you from enjoying the woods. For many years I spent every moment available to me in the woods and mountains. I had a couple or three encounters with bears up close. I never felt threatened and always the bear left peacefully. Do a search. The number of people killed by bears, unprovoked, is miniscule. A bit more dangerous with grizzlies or Alaskan brownies but still not your worst danger in the woods. Go and have a good time. Take bear spray if you wish but just walk slowly away is my advice. Polecat
Yess i will! Over here we didn't get any alaskan or grizzly bears so probably i'm good i just heard we got bears up in these mountains and i guess it's brownies! So probably it's pretty safe tho as long they know you're there and don't get surprised when they see you!

The Remingtons would be better than nothing, and might provide some mental relief. If I didn't have anything bigger I'd take them both.

Odds are you won't make contact with something intent on having you for supper. Just be smart, don't leave food laying around, I'd put it in a bag and suspend it from a tree. Make plenty noise so you don't surprise them.

Remember the old joke about 2 guys being chased by a Grizzly... one said "no way we're gonna outrun this bear. " Other one said, "I don't have to outrun the bear...I only have to outrun YOU!"
Yepp would probably feel safer with that then nothing at all so guess i might take them both with me and hope i don't get any bears chasing me 😄 i think it's pretty okay tho i mean we didn't get grizzlys over here! I think the ones we got are brown bears! And i don't know much about brown bears either but probably grizzlys are way more dangerous!

A .44 Remington unmentionable (think Dirty Harry - Clint Eastwood) with all 6 hollowpoint rounds might slow it up, try to get a shot off through it's open mouth. Having said that, I'm sure more than one "mountain man" had to face that situation with a black powder pistol and/or rifle, not sure how many of them survived. Take bear mace, lot's of it, who knows, it might work, and sleep with a good pair of running shoes on. :thumb:
Yepp probably i might not be the first one trying to survive a bear attack with a remington in case i'm unlucly and get attacked....the ods aren't big but i just wanted to know how much of a defense they could be in such a scenario 😄

Did a search, 69 confirmed bear attack deaths since 2000in North America,
low probability, but hardly minuscule. Load ‘rm up, better than nothing.

I would place all my money on the bear spray. Been only 1 or 2 fatalities that occurred after spray deployed. They cant stand it anymore than we can. A big grizzly can take 6 in the pump and is more than able to finish his revenge upon the shooter.

Buddy went to Alaska after griz. Guide clearly stated that if a shot is made and the bear didint drop the hunt was OVER. They refused to track. They packed up and went the other direction. Too many .338 mag "killed" griz have made it to the alders and then finished off a guide n client or two the next day. Them are MEAN. He did shoot one at 175 yds and slammed it in the heart area and it got in the trees. His trophy is 8mm (film). they were not kidding, went 7 miles outta the way back to camp and never looked a minute. Take the guns fer sure but have that spray ready as well.

Coincidentally, there have been reports this week of a mama black bear and cub marauding my neighborhood. I’m not home right now but I plan to load up the Walker and a Dragoon when I return.

I just did an online search, the USA average 43 deaths a Year by Lightning strikes! So forget the bear, don't point them Rem 58's at the sky!!!!

Seriously, go have a great time, take pictures, and share them here.

Near my neighborhood about a week ago.

I should clarify: “near” my neighborhood is in Glacier National Park. 😁

And speaking of statistics… I don’t care how low the probability - I don’t plan to take chances.

Good to have both i guess! And being ready to run....
i'm not sure if the bear spray is legal here i will check. If it's some kinda pefferspray it's not legal. So i will go read what it contains!

Yeah man always good to be on safe side. What bullets would actually work best for such a scenario with muzzleloaders?

I’m not the one to ask but I usually shoot conicals in my .44 revolvers. But that’s a good question for others.

I also have a couple of the unmentionable interchangeable cylinders. I plan to keep them handy. (With apologies to moderators.)
