You ignored the very first clue. The bird had only been a member for two days. I will not do any business unless you have been here a year or more and I can find lots of your posts.
Pay Pal et al? Money orders? NOT happening. My bank will send you a check. I may be old but I can wait til you get it and it clears. Sell you something? Sure, but it won't ship til I have your genuine yankee dollars in my hot hands.

I bought a rifle from someone here, I had only been a member for a couple weeks or so. Only glitch was my paypal didnt work at first since I hadnt used it in a year and a half or so, so my credit card attached to it thought it was a fake transaction. It went through after I contacted them and told them it was me.

There was a website about scamming scammers, one guy reported messing with a scammer guy in africa, it took him months. The guy wanted him to send him some laptop computers, he ended up sending him several heavy boxes of old books and magazines, freight collect, saying he was getting divorced and his wife accidentally sent them. He ended up drawing the guy in....the ending of it all was pretty intense.

I agree with being on the lookout for frauds and scammers, but are you saying that one needs to have been a member for a year or have several hundred post in order to buy and sell? By the way, this is my 4th post and I've been a member for less than a year, but about 6 weeks longer than you.

I cheerfully acknowledge all of that gunny.
Just saying what I do to keep my own money safe. I do hope you are not offended.

No, not offended at all, I got over being offended my first day at Parris Island back in '77'. I just thought the statement of having to be a member for a year or have numerous post to buy or sell would put off any potential new members. Maybe when I read your post it just hit me wrong. I put up with scammers at the shop all the time, both phone and internet orders, IP addresses show some are from around the world. As a retired criminal investigator, it really does gall me that there is nothing you can do about it except be on guard.

YES THIS GUY HAS HIT TWICE THIS YEAR...,
SAME method.

He trolls the want ads, and one of our members who is interested in a gun, but writes how he wish he had the funds, etc etc, will get a PM from a very new member. The PM will say the new member knows a third party ("I know a guy" or "I have a friend") who is selling a gun just like the one you want, and maybe you can get a good price. The sender of the PM will provide an email....,

..., IF the member contacts the email, they indeed will get an offer to be sold a gun at a very reasonable price. The money will be sent in some fashion but the gun will never show up....., the new member will have disappeared as well....,

..., Sometimes if you ask for photos, you will find the scam artist will send you some..., but if you then look for that gun on the internet and check the images, you will find they are the same ones emailed to you as "photos of my gun for sale".

..., the problem with catching this guy, is that the amounts are normally under $1500.00 threshold for a felony, so a local PD isn't going to invest much time following up any leads to find the guy..., and he knows it. The more complex the trail, the faster law enforcement will run out of motivation to catch him. His drawback is that he has to do a bunch of these in many different parts of the internet, to get a good amount of cash, which is why he is impatient. Folks are onto him and shutting him down.

I've worked dozens of these fraud cases. In 99% of them, the actors are foriegn and NO ONE, not the FBI, CIA, NATO, UNESCO, or any other alphabet agency can help.
Many times your bank will cover the loss if you file an affidavit of loss with them.

I worked a HUGE scam where this dim witted girl was getting cashiers checks from Nigeria, she thought the actor LUVED her, so she sent him tons of new clothes and cases of that orange hand cleaner. She was taking a cut from the checks for a Handling Fee, and her entire trailer had cases of hand cleaner and XL-tall shirts ready to ship.

The postal inspectors needed a trailer to haul it off.

I've done Dozens of deals using PayPal with never a problem. But I am selective who I deal with, a new member has to prove himself.

it is the same scam that I got hit with, his brother in TX, has his gun and send the $ to him, for a flint lock pistol, he said that his brother would send the gun out to me after he go home from work, waited 3 days he said that his brother sent it to me. I asked for a tracking #, never herd from him again. no gun and out $.

Careful messing with these scammers. I fellow in my hometown was “ swatted “ by one after messing with the person for a few days. Could have ended very badly.

After two transactions where the quality of the item was much less than described (rusted barrel, faulty lock), and successfully recognized scam a number of times, I no longer buy sight unseen. I need to see it, inspect it, take the lock off, and make an evaluation of the seller's character before I hand over any cash.

I had a guy pm me once over a percussion lock I was looking for.He said he had the lock ,that he lived in England and wanted a Wells Fargo money transfer.I asked him for pics but he said that his camera was broken so no pics.I then asked him if the lock had a tiger engraved on it like the one I was looking for did and he said oh yes it did.Of course I made that part up but it confirmed my suspicion that he was a scammer. These guys are everywhere so was has to be careful
