For Sale: One original third (India) pattern British Brown Bess Musket. This musket being at least two centuries old has many stories to tell, the least of which is that it is still in shootable shape ( I'll speak more on this in a bit.) From the butt going forward, there are many stamps in the stock. On the right side of the butt are star shaped stamping ( I have not seen these before and don't know what they mean) Just above that is the GR shop keepers stamping. moving forward on the right side the bottom of the lock mortise has scabbed off and has been professionally re-attached) (See pictures) moving forward about half way along the forearm is what I initially thought was a duffle bag cut, (but why would a GI duffle cut a Brown Bess?) Upon seeing other muskets of this era I now believe that it is a period repair. Starting along the left butt, there are more of the "star" stampings in the stock. Next there is the broad arrow and BO (Board of Ordnance) stamping and up on near the side plate are the letters I.B. and J.P. stamped in two places. The lock is in excellent working order and will create a shower of sparks that modern locks would envy (however it is very heavy and is a flint smasher (I'll include 8 or 9 flints that I bought for this gun). The outside of the barrel is bright for a two hundred plus year old gun however the bore is exactly as you would imagine an iron barrel's bore. it's rough but shootable. Yes I have live fired this weapon. I have sent twenty five .750 patched round balls down range. These were being pushed by 80 grains of Swiss 1Fg powder. (however it will be up to you if you wish to display or shoot this old girl) The Trigger pull is smooth but very VERY heavy. It breaks clean and this lock is fast. I have a theory regarding the lock's cock. It has either worn over they years as it fits and works but is a little wobbly on the tumbler OR it is a period replacement (if it could only talk). I will be up loading the 31 pictures that I have taken. If you have any other photo requests, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate. I am asking $900 (Or Best Offer) shipped to you. I will except Checks, Money orders, or DISCREET Paypal Payments ( I will not ask you to use the Friends or Family option). Thank you for looking!
I've had Jap. WW2 rifles with the duffel cut; I can see a military man buying a Bess back in the day, maybe not during actual war-time, and bringing it back in a trunk...an officer, perhaps who found one at a shop in England? Very interesting! Thanks.
