Jim K sent me a piece of maple...I'm going to glue it to my mountain rifle so I can replace the cheekpiece I filed off ,,,oh...maybe 50 years ago. There's more to it than that...but mostly...we'll see

I kept trying to reach for the guns but the glass got in my way. Lots of trade guns and everything a trading post would have. Neat place out in the pine ridge.

There appears to be more flintlock long guns than Hawken rifles.

Mostly trade guns. Only one true Hawken and and mix of early cartridge rifles and pistols. Museum is on the original site of the Bordeaux trading post.

That kinda makes sense. Hawkins were high-end desirables. Just like in today’s gun stores, you wouldn’t expect one to be filled with nothing but Weatherbys and the like. You see way more cheaper guns than high-end.

I have to make a trial steel patten with a slot so the barrel holding wedge can go through it. I cannot copy the .36 rifle barrels , as the 28g barrels are so thin in comparison nor do I want to add heat as the ribs could come apart I decided to make a 6” long plate which bridges to thicker pads I can possible tig weld on , or at worst epoxy together either way I am not particularly happy. Nothing fixed at the moment , just trying to find best solution . But good progress fitting cartridge double shotgun barrels to a ml .36 double rifle It’s waiting for temporary glue to dry so I can get final measurements .

Got some more work done on the SMR last night. Pipes and trigger guard need to be put on still, front trigger rests on the sear so I need to back that off a little bit. Going well so far.

Anyone else find the set trigger on the SMR really tight on your finger?

Looks decent in the sun with a little water. I don't think I'll need to change the coloring with stains or dyes, what do you think?

I’ve noticed that the set trigger on my SMR is a bit tight in its physical curled shape. The tension seems okay, but I will eventually want to straighten it just a little so it doesn’t pinch my finger so much. And I have average hands that aren’t chubby at all. The trigger radius seems awful small.

Agreed. If there is space I might bend it out, or even take a 1/16" or so off the end so there is room to bend it a bit. It bites my fingertip. If I stick my finger through and use the middle section of finger it's not too bad but with a long range session it might get uncomfortable over time.

Kinda busy day today. Spent better part of a hour looking for my .40 ball puller, fouling scraper, and jag. Found the ball puller and scraper but no jag. Realized I didn't own one only after looking up my TOW order history. Started playing with my tow worm found it was threaded on the larger size of 8/32. Wouldn't fit any of my 8/32 rod end. It would start and bind after a turn and a half. Got that worked out after a few choice words. I installed a ram rod tip on my 45 Kentukian percussion gun. Relocated my knife sheath on SMR bag to the strap from the bag. Ordered a 40 jag and 45 ball puller. Then ordered an adapter for 10/32 male to 8/32 female so I can dual purpose my Kibler range rod on the 40 and 45. Also over the last couple of days I have been dipping and drying my mattress and pillow ticking per Dutch's dry patching formula to see what my 40 likes best. All in all it's been a good few days

SMR is assembled, next up is ramrod fitting and metal cleanup. Waiting to start on the wood under I get the toe plate and inlays put in. Kinda nervous since I've never done them but I'll do some practice inlays first, can't be too difficult right?

Cold damp and miserable uk Had a go at a garden squirrel but my pcp air is getting too low, I need a £24 service kit for my 3000 psi Hall pump . Just looking down garden from my chair.

I made the final plate , left, for the above 28g barrel wedge. It’s now epoxy tacked in place now waiting for epoxy to cure .

Winter is soon upon us , almost spring in
OZ March is most pleasant month in WA , I was cold in November till we drove to Coral bay up the west coast of OZ , .,,,,,,,,last time wet and freezing , feeding prawns to the gigantic rays down south, think it’s that Artic wind.

Coned the barrel on my granddaughters CVA Frontier rifle today. I used Hambergs coning tool. This tool will cone from 32 to 62. This is the first time I've used it and I'll try it this weekend. If I like the results I have eight more to do eventually in 40, 45, 50, 54 and 58. Leaving it mostly to the pictures which pretty well explains it.

I did 150, 220, 320 and 400. I might do 600 later as well but not until I test shoot it first. I will probably firelap this barrel before doing the round ball test.

I didn't cone it to the point where a ball can be thumb started. I wanted it to be easier to load a tight combination without damaging the patch. Also rounded the crown with the thumb method.

See if there are any Muzzleloadering clubs near you. It can make things a whole lot easier and take the guess work out of learning.

I just set my range up for tomorrow’s big Kentucky/Pennsylvania blanket shoot, bbq, and fish fry. It’s a lot of work but folks really appreciate it.
