Hello All,

I'm new here and wanted to see if anyone could provide any insight to this Flintlock Rifle I was given by my grandparents. It shows "Made in Spain" and also what looks like "JB C12 m/m with serial number 33141. I'm just trying to find out more information about it. Is it a replica, or real? What year would it have been manufactured? What's it worth? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Your gun is a percussion (cap fired) example of a many-varied black powder only "trade Gun" that were widely available in the 1960's and 1970's. Many were made is Spain and Belgium for sale to "natives" on 3-world countries where ownership of modern guns was restricted. Fortunately, when the muzzle-loading boom hit here, that type of gun was sold via magazine ads, etc. to shooters in the U.S.A. Yours is typical of the genre.

Bores vary between standard diameters/gauges to apparently what was on hand at the time. Prices at the time were typically not very high, but are bringing more these days when they show up. First order of business - CHECK TO SEE IF IT's LOADED. With the gun standing on it's butt, take the ramrod lay it alongside the barrel. If the ramrod's length matches the outside of the barrel, insert the ramrod into the barrel. If it goes all the way in with nothing sticking out, the guns is probably unloaded. MANY muzzleloaders were left loaded.

A term sometimes used for a gun such as yours is "Monkey Gun" - used to hunt monkeys in jungles. I've seen them sell for $50 up to $200. You will have a difficult time finding spare parts. The "Shell" in the stock is for cloth patches, percussion caps, or whatever the owner wishes.
