    Bedford County, PA Flintlocks

Crockett, The lock was disassembled, and I didn't want to disturb it. Dave was busy with customers. I'll go back next Tues. and try and get pictures of the cock and rat-tail, as well as the barrel. Jimbo

Here are some pictures of one of the rifles: This is the good side, the other side was badly burned in a fire. It has been rubbed down with steel wool and a finish applied: This is the burnt side. Filler will be applied and the engraving on the other side will be duplicated. It...

    Heavy Sigh

I learned the dry patch lesson the hard way. I pulled the tip off my ramrod and had to shoot it out with 4F thru the vent hole. Then I had to buy a new ramrod. Jimbo

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

RB, Thanx for all the good advice. I need to hunt with it Oct 15 thru 22. I'm going to mail it per your instructions Monday the 24th so I can get it back and shoot it by late November for the regular rifle season. Jimbo

I talked to Dave and he said it was ok to come take pictures of these rifles. I'm headed there today after work. They are only in the beginning stages of restoration. He has a lot of other jobs that take precedence and these are done as time permits. I'll try to get closeups of any proof...

GM Barrel Update - Sight question

Lone Wolf, I'm not crazy about the original front sights on my Renegade. I'm old, wear bifocals and have trouble getting things in focus. How do you like that Hunter Peep? Is the aperture removable to make a ghost ring? My Renegade has a small screw between the two that fasten the tang...

    Old Eyes GPR hunting settup

Pasquinel, I'm 57 and wear bifocals. I'm shooting a TC Renegade flinter with the original sights (notched rear, blade front). I have trouble getting everything lined up and in focus and would like to find different sights that will fit in the same dovetails. I've been thinking of...

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

I don't have access to a range, so today was the last sight-in opportunity before the opening day of PA early muzzleloader season. I fired 13 shots - 80 grains Goex 3F, .490 Hornady Roundball, .015 TC pre-lube patch. I only had one missfire - another dryball! The TC agate flint was new and...

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

Limb-No Leaf Maybe It sure can't hurt. . . I know all about limbs. I shot at a nice buck last year standing behind a brushpile. I saw what I thought was an opening in front of his chest. Must've been something there because I never touched him and shouldn't have missed. Only buck I saw...

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

There have been a number of postings about the TC hammer upgrade. Although I haven't seen it mentioned recently, I thought I remembered that a harder frizzen was also part of the upgrade. Mine's pretty ugly: I'm not sure whether I should get TC to take care of it or do it myself. Any...

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

As I stated above, I want to get my Renegade to shoot dead-on at 100 yards. The rationale for this is explained in this article written by B.E. Spencer: Practical Hunting Trajectories In order to duplicate his results on the Gun-Controller ballistics chart it is necessary to achieve a...

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

RB, I'd been wondering about the short starter. I will get another one. While we're on the subject of roundballs, the box I have is fairly old and has been stored in a variety of conditions over the years. They have a frosted, scaly appearance. I assumed that this would have no...

    Bedford County, PA Flintlocks

Dave, my gunsmith is restoring two old flintlocks, one of which was partially burned in a fire. The 200+ year old wood looks very delicate and probably wouldn't withstand shooting. The lines of these rifles are very clean and graceful. They're going to be wall guns. I'll try and post some...

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

Sunday October 2 Results Again, I was pressed for time and only got to shoot 11 shots. I wiped between shots with TC Bore Cleaner followed by a dry patch. I flipped each one making a total of 4 passes after each shot. I picked the touch hole each time and wiped the frizzen, flint, and pan...

T/C SERVICE ON A OLDER LOCK HAMMER UPGRADE

Stormtrooper, I need to send my Renegade lock back for the upgrade. I have a one-month window of Oct 22 to Nov 28 to get it there and back again. I would appreciate your letting us know your turnaround time during this busy season. Jimbo

    Gonna Shoot The Renegade Today

I'm headed out to the back 40 and make some smoke. I want to work up my hunting load for this season. I also want to work on the dependability of the lock. I sold my Omega In@%&*% and would like to leave the 30-30 at home during the regular gun season. However, I have 3 tags to fill and my...

    Renegade Flinter Disassembly

Gordy, I used hot water and dish detergent followed by a WD-40 spray. I let the parts sit for 1/2 hour, then sprayed them with Remoil. After putting it back together, I wiped the frizzen, flash pan, and flint with 90% alcohol. It seemed to work OK. I'm not a big WD-40 fan, either...

    Renegade Flinter Disassembly

Finally got the nerve up to take the lock apart! The worst part was getting the mainspring to move. The glove is a good idea, those pliers could do some serious damage. With the instructions and the diagram, the rest was a piece of cake. Thanks! Jimbo
