    High Pressure?

I think a blowback is most likely if you "short-start" a bullet (don't shove it all the way against the charge. That allows more pressure to build up before the round starts to move. Or somebody tried to use smokeless powder which will result in a blowup rather than a blowback. Has been said...

    1st Match

How much powder are you using? I tried 90 grains of ffg (Hornady's recommended load) behind a 350 grain conical in a .50 cal T/C Renegade and got turned around! Learned later that 60-70 grains was as effective in mv with a lot less fire and pain. As far as the cheek part, I sold the Renegade...

    primer

I use the first one you pictured (push down) with my .50 flintlock. Like it because you get a consistent measure and only a small amount at a push. Some people think they need to fill the pan but that doesn't make it fire any faster and blows a lot more smoke in your face. Besides, too much...

    minie ball 1st shot issues

With all due respects, I'd be happy to be able to see well enough to shoot a group like that at 50 yards! But it supports my theory that it's "cold bore" effect. Not much you can do about that unless you want to pop a blank charge first to foul the barrel. And another factor is how much the...

    minie ball 1st shot issues

You can get a .577 sizer from DGW just be sure that you lube the bullets first. I've had no accuracy issues with either of my rifles; the old Zoli's had a reputation for being a bit loose but mine does OK. Like Mooman said, it sure sounds like a warmup issue and possibly undersize rounds. Also...

    minie ball 1st shot issues

Sounds like once the barrel is warmed up after the first shot, things tighten up. (That's why some matches have a "cold barrel" shoot to start things off.) Could also have something to do with the diameter of your rounds; I run all of mine through a .577 sizing die after lubing them to ensure...

    Lubing conicals

I lube my .58 Minie balls with a mixture of lard and beeswax. In this part of the country (Texas) some of the commercial lubes tend to melt in the summer. Run them through a .577 sizing die to compress the lube into the grooves.
