    Very few fawns....wolves?

I am not against controlling/hunting predator populations, I am for it. I am against eradication. To clarify the Indians also reduced predator populations.

    Muzzleloading deer kill 2007

Those numbers are probably just from our separate season. I wonder how many are taken during the regular gun deer season with smokepoles. Another interesting statistic would be what percentage are taken with those inline abominations. I would guess 75%.

    Very few fawns....wolves?

I would think fawn numbers are down mainly from the harsh winter we had. I don't think predation by wolves would be as great as those by black bears, there are many more of them. We have been both blessed and cursed (CWD,car collisions etc.) by too many deer in much of WI. A little predation...

From "that thing" to "your rifle"

I was talking with an animal rights activist I know (I have a high tolerance for stupidity). He thought muzzleloaders would be less humane, because they are less accurate and less powerful that a 30-06. I explained they make you take better shots, which increase your chances of making a clean...

    Lead Contamination of Gun-Shot Deer

I'm 100% sure they were bald eagles white heads and all. One was sitting on a road kill. My car missed it by 10 ft.

    Lead Contamination of Gun-Shot Deer

I doubt there is a problem from eating deer killed with lead bullets if you process your own deer. I could see a possible problem from ground venison from commercial processors with poor quality control. I have seen several deer carcasses being fed on by Bald Eagles. I don't think anyone can...

    Lead Contamination of Gun-Shot Deer

Paul, In some ways we balance eachother out. I'm more inclined to err on the side of human and wildlife health and your more inclinded to protect gun and hunting rights. Things I think we both value. :)

    Lead Contamination of Gun-Shot Deer

It seems odd to be paranoid about lead in children's toys and then inject it into their food. I'm not concerned about bullets in deer as I don't use bullets that over fragment, but I'll stick with non-toxic shot. Birds pick up lead and it stays in their gizzards for a time and that's why...

    Bird and Ball?

As stated such a load would probably be inaccurate and shot patterns would be poor. Not to mention the possibility of shredding a grouse with a .54 or larger PRB. frontiersmen and native were adept hunters targeting and loading for specific game. Light for grouse heavy for ducks and geese and...

    flinch?

Great topic. I've got a flinch, and it is time I get it under control. I'll start practicing with some of these methods from home. Thanks

    DANG IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's only a shame if it died of a gut shot. It is nice to know that a deer can out fox us occasionally

    any truth to this?

I agree that there would be no issue with wedging. I wonder if it would be necessary to trim the wad, top or bottom. I don't think I would bother if I was already getting good patterns.

Stain for curly maple knife handle?

Thanks for the advice everyone. Please write more suggestions if you have them. I made my own countersink for the first knife I made, but it didn’t work out well, so I was hoping to find one I could buy. I might give it another try though.

Stain for curly maple knife handle?

I am making a couple of knives from Green River blanks. I want to make the handle with curly maple scales, and would like to know what kind of finish would bring out the curl and still stand up to being washed frequently. Another question that I have is where to get a counter sink for the...

    SXS field safety?

I'll give the extra OS card a try and punching a hole in them too. I'm currently only using steel shot with the appropriate shot cup, so I don't think that I need the lube. Thanks

    SXS field safety?

In a duck blind I can cock both hammers with my thumb, it's a long thumb. The reseating the charge thing makes sense. I've had all the shot roll out of the barrel on me before, but what about firing both barrels in rapid succession. Will the second barrel's load be loose and potentially...

    Caliber for Squirrel Hunting

One more story for squirrel hunters and bow hunters. In WI a kid saw a tuft of hair on the side of a tree that he thought was a squirrel. Unfortunately he was a good shot and put a .22 bullet in the head of a bow hunter. Blaze Orange Tape is a good idea

    French Fusils

Some of the photos I have seen of original guns have a poor inletting job for example on the butt plate. I can’t remember if they still had original stocks or were restocked. If they were original I guess if you wanted to be PC, then you would purposely do a bad job putting together a Fusil...

    Srew in chokes ?

I’ve got a double 10 gauge from Cabela’s with screw in chokes. I think it’s a pretty shotgun until I look at the business end. You’ll regret it if you install screw-in chokes, especially on a flintlock.
