    50 cal hawken for ELK?

While it can and has been done with .50s time and again. I think I'd go ahead and peddel those inlines and spend some of the money to replace one of those .50 barrels with a .54. Here where I hang my hat, the country is thick with brush and steep. I've yet to take an elk with a M/L, but I've...

First Shoot with the Free Trappers

I finished dead last in the shoot but had the most fun I have had in a long time and really learned a lot. That's what it's all about, having a great time and meeting great people. Years ago I was invited to a turky shoot hosted by the Yakima, Wa. M/L Club. All in all, I did the same as you...

    A .32 & A .45

A good friend left me a couple of pistols, when he died. And I have no idea where to start on loads for them or what is the max load for each. :hmm: The .32 is a CVA Pioneer with a 7 3/4" Barrel. The .45 ia a Jukar with a 10" barrel. Both are cap locks and appear as if fired very little. I...

    Do you grease

Natural Lube 1000 is what I normaly use. I have a bottle of that Hoppies #9+ but haven't tried it yet. I'm working on a 1/4# container of Bumblin Bear Grease right now, kind of a hard sticky stuff. Don't know if it'd be all that great in the winter, as i'm sure it'd harden up even more out in...

    Do you grease

Do you grease both sides of your patch, or just the side that comes in contact with the bore? Seems the patch would get a better grip on the ball, if the ball side was not lubed and your lube would go nearly twice as far. But, would it cause burn throughs? Thanks!:hmm...

    Need Expert Advice

I'd try repalcing the hammer spring. Perhaps sombody left it cocked, for several months or longer, and the spring took on a memory i.e the spring has become weak, so the hammer dosen't hit the cap hard enough. If that is the case, musket caps won't fire either. Seems musket caps take a harder...

    36 cal. rifles

Nope your not alone! Like Canerod, I really like my .36 T/C. It's cheap to shoot and accurate to boot! :haha: . I use 40 to 60 grains of powder and there's near zero recoil. Varmints hate that gun! Try it, you'll like it too!!

    Lyman Trade Rifle In .54?

Thanks all for the info! I'll see what I can do in the next few days. This shakey economy, has me on edge, as to what to spend my few depleating dollars on. Maybe I ought to just keep what I have and buy more powder-n-shot, and storable foods!? Looks like were in for some bad weather, economy...

    Lyman Trade Rifle In .54?

Thanks longfowler, I have several caplock rifles and pistols, but not one flinter. I think they'd be happy to have a flinter in the safe with them. But I don't know that the wife would agree. LOL!! :surrender: How many shots on average, do you think you get from a flint? And how long does the...

    Lyman Trade Rifle In .54?

The flintlock bug finally bit me. I've done several searches on here reguarding the Lyman Trade Rifle, but found nothing, lots on the GPR but not the Trade Rifle. I see there selling for $282.87 at DNR Sports. Can anyone tell me if there a good accurate soild built rifle? I don't know anything...

    Velocity & Energy levels

I've taken 3 deer with my Dan Wesson .357 8" W/180 gr. cast G.C. Made um weak in the knees right now! My Bro. took an elk in the Bob Martial Wilderness, when he was packing and guiding up there. One shot one elk! The .36 PRB ought to take deer just fine too, as it has alot more going for it than...

    Velocity & Energy levels

I agree Britsmoothy; Back in the mid. 50's, when I was about 11 years old. My father fell upon hard times, it was a hard winter and he was out of work. And so was my sisters husband and they had 4 kids to feed. We all ended up living on venison and spuds, for the most part. My dad killed 8 deer...

    Velocity & Energy levels

Sorry there Roundball; I diden't mean to get anyone fired up. I just posted this piece for food for thought, or sake of argument. I'm not new to muzzle stuffer shooting, but am to hunting with them. Since I have been reading you folks posts on here, I've decided to hunt this next season with the...

    Velocity & Energy levels

I see alot of debate on this subject here and ran across this artical. May be of help to some folk. It seems in Europe they don't worry much about energy level figures, instead it's bullet weight and velocity "isen't that energy levels"? While in some countrys and states it's the in thing. Here...

    Jim Shockey’s Gold

I was reading on another forum where they were having trouble with there sub. powder going south after opening a can. Their solution was to put a piese of plastic wrap over the container mouth before replaceing the cap. I'd think that silacon thread tape may work better, Ya woulden't have to...
