    Living off the land foods

i've always carried a small bottle of red wine vinegar and a matching bottle of olive oil while on a hike/trek/rove. dandelions, miner's lettuce, fireweed, chickory flowers, etc, tossed with vinegar, oil, salt and pepper. feel free to garnish with crushed cranberries, raspberries or...

    Has anyone tried this?

hm... maybe cover the horn with wax, then scrape the wax away from where you want the stain? that way, if it did get everywhere, you could just melt/shave the wax off, and bam, color only where you want it. kind of like how some knifemakers will etch their mark on the blade.

    Knife steel material

well said! :applause: it's a great book, it taught me a great deal. studying a lot of the literature out there will give one of two impressions RE: heat treatment. it's either some mystical process in which your blade must point north(or south, depending on the alignment of the capricorn in...

    Black Powder Smoke

maybe we could just have a nice quick nuclear war before the global warming gets too bad. wait, nevermind.. the scientists who caused the nuclear winter panic later retracted their statements when someone pointed out that Mt St Helens blew with more explosive power than the entire nuclear...

    Cross-Patching Conicals

hm... i'd like an image of that die. might be kind of fun to try that with some of the machining tools i have at work.

    Flintlock Pistol @ 50 Yards

also a great trick, while dry firing, put a dime on the top flat of your pistol. it'll tell you if you're jerking, flinching, or pushing. it's a HUGE aid in getting proper trigger pull.

    Brass canteens

amen. i've come down with montezuma's revenge(not quite giardia, but sometimes used to refer to it) once or twice in my life, ever. i was lucky the second time, it manifested primarily as tremenously loud flatulence and a constant sick feeling(and the farts echoed off the walls of the valley my...

    navy .36

well, the real thing that bugs me is that the bump is on both a land and a groove in rifling. it's not a sharp burr... more of just a gentle raising. i'm gonna take it to a gunsmith nearby, ask him what he thinks. here's hoping i don't need a new barrel(i paid maybe 75 bucks for it, used, from...

    Flintlock kits?

you know what, if them dang martians make a good gun, are they all that wrong? and hey, be sure to order the 'special', that's the one that looks like a blunderbuss, but there's an earth shattering kaboom if you use the PU-138 primer.

there are a lot of places where they'll heat treat for you. most welding shops can do it. just tell them you need it to about 58c and that it's A-2, and they'll smile and ask for ten bucks. you also need less equipment with stock removal techniques, as little as a hacksaw and a file. i...

    navy .36

okay, actually came across it. hm. viewing it now, that defect/burr is a lot smaller than i recall. i'll see if i can get a picture posted to get opinions.

    navy .36

i can weld, but i dunno if it'd be worth the trouble. the bit's not huge by any means, it's noticable but hardly prominent... wonder how much effect it's actually having? where might i obtain a replacement? i look around, but i've not found many parts places yet.

    navy .36

okay, i've got a navy .36 cap and ball. somewhere... it got packed away a while back, as it needed a fair bit of work. new nipples, etc. but my question is: there's bump inside the rifling, in the bore. it's under the front sight. i figure, while that was getting bored/tapped, it was done too...

okay, the fishing lure idea is just plain smart. i'll keep that one in the tackle box, right next to the salted hotdogs. not a bad idea for touching up your gunsights, either, with the high contrast paint. it's also really durable.

    Brass canteens

slick. the oglio-something or other effect? hm... while it's not something to rely on, but it would justify using copper tube/pipe to run water from the springhouse to the cistern, which might be beaten copper sheet, if i ever get to building that hunting lodge(which presupposes i'd have to...

    Brass canteens

hey, i suppose that's the end result of having a system that works really well. you stop looking for a replacement. yeah, copper is cool like that. i've never understood the property though, the whole killing bacteria thing.

    Brass canteens

i boil. 100% effective when brought to a rolling boil. if you're worried, hold it at a boil for a minute or two, but it's not needed. i also never need to change elements or worry about clogs. there's never a chance of the filter cracking or failing and passing contaminated water either...

    Knife steel material

if i might add to the discussion, try using A2 tool steel. do simple stock removal with a grinder, it'll most likely be stronger and better than anything you could hammer out at the forge, with a consistent structure throughout the metal. the metal air-quenches, too. a handy feature if you're...
