    New Shooter/First Flintlock

Thanks, Deaddawg I'd never heard of white chert, so I'll try a couple of those when I order a variety of flints to try. Thanks for the tip. Sam

    New Shooter/First Flintlock

Glad to hear it's a decent lock”“I'll tell you it's fitted really well, that's for sure. I did remove it, inspected and oiled the insides a bit. I'm going to order some good flints and see if the spark improves, though. I don't believe it's what it should be. Did put a 7/8" flint back in the...

    New Shooter/First Flintlock

RC, 7/8"W by 1"L looks like it'd fit good with a not too thick piece of leather. I've got a hunk of dry, crappy old thick belt leather in there now”“I wanted to get rid of the lead wrap that came with the gun. Seemed like it wasn't moving to fast with the lead in the jaws.

    New Shooter/First Flintlock

Thanks, Paul. The rifling is indeed very deep. Colerain advertises .016 per side on larger calibers and I'd say it's at least that. Sounds like I need some very thick patching! It's an L&R Queen Ann lock. I think Zoar's right that the flint's supposed to be 7/8" but i just stuck a smaller one in...

    New Shooter/First Flintlock

Thanks, Zoar. The flints I've got are about very nearly as wide as the frizzen. The frizzen's got some scoring across and up high where the former owner”“and me perhaps a little”“had the flints hitting too straight on. But below those marks, and where the flint's supposed to be hitting (I think)...

    New Shooter/First Flintlock

Hello, First post on this section. I've been reading it a lot, though. Just bought my first flintlock”“a Southern 50 cal. with a Colerain barrel and L&R Queen Ann lock. It's signed "B. Turner" and I'm told it came from TVM(fg). I've done a fair amount of shooting with modern guns and a couple of...

    Smoothbore at 100 m

Thanks for the video. Not bad. I wouldn't hunt with that accuracy, but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it, either!

    hammer/nipple alignment

I hear I might be looking at PRB after trying the heavy minnies”“ people say it's a boomer. As for accuracy, it remains to be seen! I've heard some good reports about Zouave accuracy, too. The washer sounds like a good idea, and I'll try that if it seems the lock needs to get moved too far...

    hammer/nipple alignment

Thanks, Musketman. That worked nicely! The wood inside looks great. just along the top edge of the upper leg of the main/hammer spring the wood's cut a little deep and through, but only a very little bit. Altogether it looks perfectly sound. The lock looks to be in great shape. You can see a bit...

    hammer/nipple alignment

Will do, Musketman. Just need to figure out how to do that. I've removed the barrel, trigger, and two screws that hold the lock through the stock, but the lock wouldn't pop out. Looks like maybe there's a wedge up underneath the trigger plate that's maybe holding it in place. Judging from the...

    hammer/nipple alignment

Thanks, silverfox. Measure twice (at least!), cut once. I'm buying this Zouave”“a Navy/Zoli”“and the condition is a little iffy. Trying to decide if I should just resign myself to slowly fixing the bugs in it. The hammer problem's a big one, so this is very helpful as the solution seems like...

    hammer/nipple alignment

Thanks CoyoteJoe, Good suggestion, though in this case the lock would need to be shimmed outwards, and maybe a little forward. The outwards movement would likely straighten out most of the problem and would not require any uglification of the stock, filling re-cut inlets and so forth.

    hammer/nipple alignment

Thanks for the reply. No, the nipple's straight. It's a musket cap nipple. Either the angle the nipple's inserted into the breech, or the shape of the hammer would have to be changed to get a centered strike. Or maybe a purposefully bent/off center nipple! The problem's not as bad with a #11...

    hammer/nipple alignment

I've got a Navy Arms Zouave. The hammer, when dropped, falls a bit to the side of the nipple. It comes to rest over it, but it seems wrong. The hammer is moved a bit outwards as it lands. Is this acceptable? If not, is there anything that can be done about it? Should the hammer fall centered...

    TC 56

Interesting, Paul. I guess I'd better get to the range and try this out to better understand what goes on when loading shot, cards, cushion wads etc. I may pick up some shot today, but it's real cold and I think I'll wait a few days until that passes before giving this a try. Sam

Thanks jethro224, And I already have a cleaning jag! Looks like it should work nicely. I wonder if a perforated cardboard disk would work over powder. That seems like it might give some good cushioning and it's dirt cheap. It would be fairly light. The volume of air might not be good if it was...

"Like using a .509 diameter cast ball with a denim patch, because that is what you have!" Got it”“knowing what's needed to make due. Thanks, Paul Sam

    TC 56

Thanks, roundball. What you're saying makes sense to me. I guess there's a lot of experimentation that goes on! I was sitting here earlier trying to think of what materials might serve to hold shot, that would be light and perhaps frangible or meltable or might incinerate or whatever. Styrofoam...

    TC 56

Thanks for the tip. So if using the rod I've got, then use two cards with holes in them. Seems like a good way to deal with keeping shot securely in place. But why over a roundball load? The .550 ball and patch seemed to sit very tightly in the bore. Sam

    TC 56

Hello Roundball, Wil do. I did find 9/16" which would be exact, as i measured the bore at .562/.563. I wonder if the cards or felt disks were soaked in lube they'd expand enough to fit nice and snug. Anyway, there must be punches sized to, say, 19/32" or 37/64" someplace. I'm going to keep...
