    58 caliber flintlock help

Got my .570 balls made and shot gun again today. Tried 80 and 90 grs with a .022 pillow ticking patch. Shot about an 8 inch group. This size ball shot the worst of the three sizes I've tried. Patches were blown apart. I again used a Wonder wad under some loads and patches looked good but still...

    58 caliber flintlock help

Tried the .562 dia ball again with a .027 denim patch and 90 grs of 3F. This didn't shoot as good as other loads tried but patches were in good shape after firing. Going to wait for my .570 mold before a shoot again.

    58 caliber flintlock help

I've got a .570 dia mold coming so I'll give that size a try too. I've got plenty of patch material and lubes to try also.

    58 caliber flintlock help

The reason I started with a .575 was this is what I was told to use when I bought the kit from Chambers. It has been 30 or more years since I owned a 58 muzzleloader and I couldn't find my old mold so I just bought a new one not remembering what diameter I used in the past. I then tried the .562...

    58 caliber flintlock help

I went to a local range where they were having a traditional shoot hoping to find someone to shoot it but had no takers. The crown did have very sharp edged lands so I set it up in my lathe and recrowned it with a nice radius crown. The original crown cleaned up within .002 so I don't think...

    58 caliber flintlock help

Have tried Goex 2F and it didn't shoot as well and still blew patches. I think I need to find a thicker patch material that can still be seated in bore.

    58 caliber flintlock help

It has a swamped barrel so middle key is higher than front and rear keys. They all are in tenons and level with bottom flat. I tried neatsfoot oil today and was scared I'd stuck a ball, had to hammer the darn thing down. I won't be trying that again. Same patch with my lube can be rammed home...

    58 caliber flintlock help

I have tried a lubed 1/2 thick fiber wad and it did work but not as well as the Wonder Wad. I do have some 1/4 felt 12 ga wads that I might punch out to be large enough to fill the groove diameter. I read somewhere someone used 20 ga felt wads. I have not tried over 110 grs but might try...

    58 caliber flintlock help

I'm getting close, shot best group so far and it was with a thicker pants material with my beeswax-lanolin lube with a Wonder Wad under patched ball. The load was 110 grs of Swiss 3F, a .575 dia. ball and this patch. 90 grs of Swiss without a wad didn't blow the patch but didn't shoot very well...

    58 caliber flintlock help

I glass bedded the breech and tang area of barrel. The inletting was close but the glass did fill in any flaws. Didn't see any difference when I shot it again after bedding. I got several more types of patching material to try and several more lubes. One material was an upholstery cloth that...

    58 caliber flintlock help

The tang does fit well in stock but there is a little gap on one side of barrel channel where the channel had been cut too deep for barrel. Maybe I'LL bed that area to see if that helps. Lots of ideas and things to try.

    58 caliber flintlock help

The breech plug was already installed when I got the barrel. It is tight but I might pull it to see how the fit is especially if bore has bad run out at that end and if breech plug is aligned correctly with run out. Yes practice practice for off hand but the bench shooting should result in a...

    58 caliber flintlock help

My touchhole is .065 diameter and has fast ignition. Chamber's said the main spring was as strong as it could be so no speeding up the cock. I can use a pinch to a pan full and this gun goes bang every time until flint gets dull. I think most of the accuracy problems are barrel, ball size or...

    58 caliber flintlock help

Yes I'm using a peep sight that I use on most of my iron sighted rifles now. I also use very small targets so I can try to hold steady. I can shoot well off hand with peep sights just not with this flintlock! Can't get it to shoot off bench either. I'LL get it figured out someday. Keep finding...

    58 caliber flintlock help

I'm starting to really think about the barrel heat moving my point of impact. I've noticed that the first two shots every time I shoot are to the sights and together. I do wipe between every shot so it has to be barrel heating up and not fouling. I may slot my pin holes to make sure expansion...

    58 caliber flintlock help

My ignition is almost instantaneous but the cock fall does seem slow. I've videoed it several times and it is very fast. I do see my head move a little after cock has fallen but before flash in pan happens, this is in slow motion frame by frame that I see this. The time between flash and bloom...

    58 caliber flintlock help

You know I thought of barrel moving too because it is a swamped barrel and I'm sure these can move around do to heat. My barrel is pinned to stock and I didn't make the holes slots to allow for expansion of wood or barrel. Maybe I'LL try that next. I did shoot it this morning and the first two...

    58 caliber flintlock help

The twist rate is 1-66. Yes I agree with the size of my bore and groove diameter .562 seems small but I have to try something. I might try some .570 diameter balls too.

Thanks guys, I'LL keep trying. Have a .562 mold on the way so we'll see how that works.
