    kit or no kit?

thanks for your input - and everybody else's. To clear up one misconception, I'm not trying to save money by buying components one at a time: I would like to get started on the project without having to have the money to buy it all at once. If I wait until I have the money for the whole kit...

    kit or no kit?

I am definitely in way over my head - i'll accept that. One thing I like about projects like this is that they force me to learn an awful lot. I'm a reasonably intelligent fellow and can follow instructions - I've learned an awful lot already from this website and others (although I should...

    kit or no kit?

I am very interested in building my own muzzleloader (probably a flintlock smoothbore). My biggest problem is coming up with funds for a kit. (Another concern I have with a kit is that anything that I might be able to afford would probably not be of great quality - and I understand that...

    Jug Choking

Out of curiousity, what are the effects of shooting a ball through a jug choked barrel?

Does anyone harvest their own stock wood?

trees exposed to the elements (like you described) would more than likely produce stronger wood with finer tighter grain. that would probably make it better than wood harvested from trees in more sheltered areas.

    What is it???

That is indeed a penny - minted in England. might help you place the lock.

    eh?

yes, I am a Canadian, interested in this whole M/L thing. I took up archery two years ago, built myself a longbow last winter, and now I'm toying with the idea of building myself a flintlock. I have basic woodworking and mechanical skills, so I know I could put the thing together. I doubt...

    template for stock

does anyone know of any online resources ('how-to's) for making a stock from scratch (basic measurements/diagrams). I've (obviously) never done it before, but if I can find some good guidance, I'd love to give it a try.

    first gun a kit?

does anyone have any experience with the kits from Cabelas?

    first gun a kit?

I have never owned or used a blackpowder gun before, but would like to get into it. Is it a stupid idea to buy a kit in the interest of saving a few bucks for a first ML?

first gun - flint or percussion?

Thank you, Johnny Tremain, for a well reasoned answer. I am definitely leaning toward a flint, as long as I can find one at the right price.

first gun - flint or percussion?

you obviously have yet to see the truly huge radar ears of a mule deer such as the ones I often hunt.

first gun - flint or percussion?

ghost makes a good point about gun regulations. My question is this, though: how impossible is it to hunt with a flint in damp weather?

first gun - flint or percussion?

I am seriously considering buying a muzzleloader because I think it would be a lot of fun (I already hunt with a centrefire rifle and a homemade longbow). I think I would prefer a caplock over a flintlock, but I am not quite sure why (lots of hunting in wet weather, maybe). Do any of you have...
