What exactly is a chunk gun match?

Chunk gun means it's not meant to be an offhand rifle, but rather to be shot "over the log" or resting on a "chunk' of wood. Most of the matches these days are shot at an X-center target. If you've ever seen the movie Sgt. York there is an over the log or chunk gun match in the movie.

    Anybody shoot "over-the-log" matches?

I'll be heading up there on Friday as well. I practiced some yesterday and need much more from what my score wound up. :hmm:

    Alvin York Memorial Shoot

I went for the first time in 2006. I didn't shoot that year I just went to see how it was done and to check out all those amazing rifles. I didn't know a soul when I got there but by the end of the day I made several friends that helped me out tremendously. I've shot the last three years. It...

    Plains Pistol trouble...

After taking the gun apart, it looks like the problem is with the trigger spring.

    Plains Pistol trouble...

It's not the lock, it worked fine when I took it out.

    Plains Pistol trouble...

The lock holds at full cock but wont engage at half cock, any idea what the cause might be.

Factory Built guns in the Big Matches?

You see quite a few T/Cs at the Alvin York shooting match, but most of the top shooters there use guns/barrels built by Paul Griffith.

2009 Alvin C. York Memorial Shoot...

It's shot prone with your rifle resting on a chunk of wood. It's normally a 10 shot match but because of the weather it was shortened to 6 shots this year and the distance is 60 yards.

2009 Alvin C. York Memorial Shoot...

the shoot was shortened to 6 matches instead of 10 because of the weather. I thought last year that it was a miracle that we got the shoot in, that pales in comparison to what it was like this year. Rain, mud, wind, and finally bright sunshine made for a very interesting day. The wind the 2nd...

2009 Alvin C. York Memorial Shoot...

The weather was finally dry and windfree enough today for me to practice. My string wound up at 13.85, two bad shots added 5 inches to what would have been an outstanding score for me. Now if I can just get in 4 or 5 more sessions between now and the match...gonna rain tomorrow.

    Best / worst percussion caps?

I've used RWS caps the past couple of years and have yet to have a misfire with them. I had more trouble with Remington caps than CCIs.

    Am I off base?

I would probably find some longer screws that are the same thread as the ones that hold on the buttplate instead of gluing the additional piece on. I've thought about doing that with my New Englander stock.
