    Short Barrel Project

A Friend, Don Fulkerson is quite fond of making Brass lockplates and short barreled halfstocks for hunting on his farm in NE Missouri Timber.A 25" barrel should make a nice working rifle.

    what size countersink bit

Here is a picture of the one I use, mine is 5/8" and depth control is pretty much trial and error(to match the particular screw head). I have to run my drillpress slow to prevent chatter(around 420 rpm). It has worked for every screw I have wanted to countersink yet. I bought this at the local...

    files?

The Bastard Cut file should be on the rack of your nearest hardware store as will be the Stanley Surform(Cheese Grater) The other file I think your mentioning is a rasp. I have a 4 cut combination,my grandson loves that one, You can get one at the Hardware store as well. If they mentioned a...

    Question about Jim Chambers KITS

Getz has developed such a reputaion for quality that while they are still producing barrels, there is such a demand that there is a long wait involved in getting one. That's an admirable position to be in! But it may not be good for a maker of parts sets like Chambers. From what I have seen of...

    Ten degrees off

I don't know anything about a Sante Fe. But I do know that on a CVA, you could twist the barrel into a pretzel before the breech plug would come out since the drum is threaded into the breechplug, and thats a heck of a big pin to shear.

DIY from scratch ... possible? References?

I totally agree on both counts! But there are some who simply have to say I did it "all myself" or have to try it for themselves. While I hav'nt yet, I may get there one day. But locks and barrels(and sometimes furniture are things I totally understand one using store bought. And many the...

DIY from scratch ... possible? References?

If you want to bore and rifle your own barrel, I highly reccomend you get on Bookies site and order a copy of his book on the Iowa Rifling Bench. He gives detailed instructions on building the rifler he uses in his shop. It is simple, economic and it works( I have taken a turn on it)...

    Single vs. Double trigger?

Having shot a lot of targets including centerfire benchrest with 2-6 oz triggers). There is nothing more delightful than a good trigger and nothing more frustrating than a creepy heavy one. I don't think it matters much if it is single or double so long as it is a good crisp trigger.(provided it...

    what size drill bit?

Yes they have taps & dies at Lowes and Home Depot. I have two tap & die sets from Lowes. But if you only want the one size you would do better at a hardware store. Neither of my sets had a tap for 4-40 which I wanted to change to over the #3 in my trigger kit. I got 4( they were small I thought...

first build with a few questions

If you do a search of "tools" there have been several discussions of start up tools that you shoud find very helpful. It does not take near as many tools as one might think. Like the old addage"Beware the man with one gun" The craftsman who develops his skills with the tools he has is far better...

    Breeching a barrel

It seems to me some time back there was an extensive thread on converting supository shotguns to muzzleloaders on the ALR site. It would take a search in the archives to find it. I remember that it was the first time I had heard the term Supository used in reference to firearms, so that might be...

This may be a dumb question?

Your dead on Bill. But I often get these dumb ideas and just have to discuss them with some more knowledgeable guys before I go with it or move on to plan B or I just hate it when I go all the way to plan Z.

This may be a dumb question?

Yes it does Roy! And thanks for taking the time to try it! I got home tonight and pulled a 3/8 " brad point out of the junk drill tray(bits that need sharpened) and filed the rake a little flatter. I took a scrap piece of the 1/8" stock and drilled an 1/8" pilot hole for the brad point. I had...

This may be a dumb question?

I'm making a new sideplate and want to recess the flathead lock bolt into 1/8" hotrolled steel. Need a flatbottomed hole. I have some brad point drills that I have only used for wood aplications. Would they be too soft to drill steel? Guess I could try it, worst case would b to ruin a bit and...

Drilling wood, fast or slow ?

I have been trying to picture spinning a stock offcenter for a ramrod hole. Closest thing I could imagine was mamma sitting on the washing machine with a load out of balance, trying to keep it from walking across the floor. If you do that please spin it very slowly!
