    Dry firing a percussion rifle

I care thats why I asked the question. I don't throw money away and a piece of leather or rubber is much better than pissing away a $7.50 nipple. FRJ

    Best Powder

There is no "best"substitute for real black powder!!!!!!! Pyrodex destroyed my GPR barrel!!! That barrel was thououghly cleaned immediatly after every shooting and again the day after. It didn't matter the Pyrodex got it rusting and pitting and I just replaced the barrel to the tune of $260.00...

    Dry firing a percussion rifle

Junkman, thank you. I will handle that. Are there any concerns about damaging or breaking the hammer with the sudden stop on a dryfire? FRJ

    Dry firing a percussion rifle

I want to practice my "offhand" shooting by dry firing my percussion rifle. I am concerned about possible damage that may occur by doing this. Any comments or suggestions? FRJ

    New thickness pillow ticking.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I thought I said I was originally shooting Hornady rb. I also thought I said that I took a caliper and that I measured the fabric and what country it was from. I guess we just don't understand each other. FRJ

    New thickness pillow ticking.

I just started casting my own rb's and the fit I had with the Hornady round balls was fine. The new balls cast a little bigger and it was a hard start to get the ball going. I went to the local Jo Anns and they had some Chinese pillow ticking that measured .015" it looked cheap but maybe thats...

Wheel weights for larger cal. round balls

Sorry to hear you guys are having problems getting lead. I just bought 40# for $21.00 and thought that was a good deal. Made over 600 54cal balls and some 45. I can get it even cheaper and its absolutly pure. This stuff casts up some nice balls and they shoot real well. Its the lead from around...

    Sling attachment

Hi Adui, I hunted the Alsea unit back then also and the deer hunting was great!!!!Oregon's hunting has gone downhill along with Washingtons mostly I believe due to the poisoning of the few clearcuts there are and the great reduction in logging. Doubt it will ever be back in my lifetime. Good to...

    Sling attachment

We all hunt in different terrain. Where I hunt, in the coast range of Oregon and Washington and the Cascade mountains of these states it is very difficult to carry a rifle and get up and down steep banks and hills. I'm not hunting when I am doing these things, I'm trying to get from one place to...

    Sling attachment

I've been looking for a method of attaching a sling to my Lyman GPR for some time now. I have asked several times on this and other web sites and have never got an answer to my question. The other day I was at my M/L store and asked Bob about this problem and he said sure I have just the thing...

    Bore or Inspection Mirrors

If your wanting to inspect the bore of your rifle why not use a bore light? I bought mine from Muzzleloading and more in Sandy Oregon but you can also use the lights that are used on fish bobbers. The first use hearing aid batteries and the latter are self contained and last darn near forever...

    Polished brass

During my stint in uncle sams army I used up several gallons of "Brasso" keeping my gear shinny. When I went to Nam that was a thing of the past and it just got grungy. FRJ

    Rifling?

Rumor has it that straight rifling was used initially to allow fouling to stay in the grooves and allow more firings between cleaning. Others will dispute that. FRJ

.45 ball in .50 cal with thicker patch?

That sounds like a good combo to try leather patches on.FRJ

    How to reduce fowling

My GPR was really fouling bad and I was using Pyrodex. I got a bore light and it showed me a badly pitted barrel. I bought a new barrel and went to real B/P only and now I can shoot all day using Windshield Washer Fluid brand 10/20. It cleans really easily and I will never use pyrodex again...

    Melted plastic on barrel

As was already mentioned use a condom as we did in Nam or do as we do now in my hunting camp. We have a roll of masking tape that we cover the bore with. If you come in from a hunt with the tape blown off you better have an animal that you need help getting out of the woods!!!!! As for the...

    Why start at 25 yards??

Its simple stuff. Getting it on at 25 makes it a lot easier to get it on at longer ranges. If I'm on at 25 and I mean really on. Then I move to 50 and on down the line. Remember if your 3" left or right at 25 that will put you 6" off at 50 and off the paper at 75. Its much easier to get it on in...

    Lapping a barrel

I do not believe that lapping a barrel does anything good for the barrel. Remember that when your polishing out the rough spots your also polishing out the good spots!!! All it really does is give you accelerated wear in your barrel.Unless the barrel is badly pitted all you need to do is shoot...

What the heck is the problem with his post? He voiced an opinion nothing more nothing less. Guess the internet cops are alive and well. FRJ
