    'Faux' damascus barrel?

a piece of old carpet works good to get a nice pattern - however I believe you are better of just making damascuss steel barrels if you like the looks - way more permanent....

    accuracy with my trade gun

I can shoot 5-6 inch groups ( 5 shots) at 50 yr. With shot my patterns are acceptable to 25-30 yr. So living in 1750 to ..... here are my thoughts: Large Lead and powder consumption! If you are living in a homestead, I guess not a big problem, and it can be a great overall weapon- if you travel...

    Poor ignition this morning.

Must be the climate.... Had a very reliable rifle ( almost 100% here in Utah/USA) and when I came to your great country to hunt deer I had the same problem.... I believe it had to do with bringing the gun from the house ( warm) into a cold & humid enviroment. Fixed it by swabbing the bore with...

    Convertible?

I had built a fullstock Flintlock rifle which had a conversion to Percussion for a customer. I will no do it again. First of all the drum MUST be supported by the lock - on the other hand the ventliner in the Flintlock then will not be perfect... By changing from drum to Ventliner often you "...

    Hangfires

Found that FFFg as main charge and primer works better then FFFFg as priming. When loading I plug the TH with a feather - so no fuse effect. Also when I carry I flintlock I try to keep it canted to the right so the priming powder stays away from the TH.

    dovetail

A soft soldered lug will be o.k. It will not come loose if done correctly. Be carefull with the heat!!. Other option would be a 0.030 dovetail and some red treadlock.

How did they clean their guns.....

Here the senario: You are alone in the wilderness, around 1780 and just fired a round from your flint lock rifle. You reload. How do you keep your bore/rifle from rusting.... I can't see that you pull the load and be defenseless.

    Locating barrel/breech plug in stock?

You are correct. However I feel that the TH should be in front of the plug and a plug in 0.550 inch should be long enough..... Choose the lengh of the plug, meassure the barrel and mark the future TH, match with the lock pan and you see where to inlet the plug/tang.... If you polish the front of...

    weather protection for barrel channel

Definitive no grease. Oil and grease ruins wood stocks!! Wax paste will guard against rust. I was always worried about rust on my hunting gun. But in the last few years, after I fired the gun, I swabbed the barrel with ballistol/ water mix untill"fairly" clean and then wiped the outside with a...

    Stain for a Maple stock?

You could try a 50% mixture of pine tar and linseed oil. Very simple, historical correct finish. Can be finished with wax, most gunstock oils or a linseed/ varnish mix.... Especially good if a lot of carving on stock!!
