    journey cakes

Arteries or no, I still like the taste of eggs and potatoes fried in bacon grease, biscuits made with lard and perculated coffee. Pie crusts made with lard - yummy. I remember reading somewhere that perculated coffee wasn't good for you either. :youcrazy: Dave

    Swaged or Run Balls?

I have just recently started casting my own RBs. Initially, all were measured for weight and size. Very few were off, and those were only off a tad. With so few rejects, measuring was a waste of time. I do look them over and remelt any with voids at the sprue or funky knit lines. After reading...

    journey cakes

I haven't had them since I was about 10. The recent Muzzle loader magazine has a story that mentions them, so out came the corn meal. My grandma used to make them for me when I would spend the night many, many years ago. We used to watch sci-fi movies and eat journey cakes and honey. She was a...

    Kasenit

While no expert, I have used Kasenit a few times quite a while ago. Here is what I did: Heat the part to be hardened with a torch (I used a propane torch) until it is cherry red, dip it into the Kasenit while hot. The Kasenit powder sticks to the part. Reheat it cherry red and then dunk it into...

    journey cakes

Tonight, I made a small batch of journey cakes fried in a bit of bacon grease. I had some dipped in maple syrup, a few with honey and the rest hot out of the pan, plain. While the bacon grease wasn't the best thing for my arteries, they sure tasted great. Dave

    One cavity mold

Dave, IS .409 the only rd ball you use? I shoot way to many different cals. and The way I work is. I will use the .490 for a while then switch to the .454 hollow point for my ruger, then do some .365 for the colt navy.By that time the .490 is cool enought Yes, I have two .50 caliber rifles and...

    One cavity mold

After casting about 700 .490 round balls using a single cavity Lee mold :cursing: , I sure wish I had spent the extra $3 :shocked2: for the 2 cavity mold. :youcrazy: Any 5 cavity molds available? Dave

    Patching strips vs pre-cut

I have a round punch and have whacked out a bunch of patches but! Cutting square patches is a whole lot easier. I can't tell the two apart on the range - except the square ones look a lot more 'muzzleloaderie' to me. Dave

    would you buy it ?

    Barrel Making Processes

Good find! Now I wonder how the rifling was done on my rifles. I'm betting they were button rifled. Dave My rifles were rifled by pulling a rifling button ... :youcrazy:

    bullet casting

Occasionally, I'll add a lb of air rifle pellets to the melting pot. Shooting air rifles is another hobby of mine, and I melt the pellets from my trap as well as any extras I don't need. Since I don't know the pellet alloy, I add a lb to 5 lbs of lead. Works great. Dave

    Soft/dangerous Spanish barrels

Makes sense to me. I have read about early gunsmiths hammering out a bulged barrel and using it again. I have a Spanish barreled gun and I shoot RB. It wouldn't surprise me if the Spanish barrel is as strong or stronger than many of the old timer guns. Dave

    bullet casting

Pure lead has a Brinnell hardness around 5 or 6 ( some testers can indicate as low as 4). Wheel weights are often said to be about 9, but can run 11 to 15. I can get 1 and 2 lb pure lead ingots from my local gun shop and the local sports warehouse for about $1 a lb. I have found lead ingots at...

REAL in a slow twist rifle?

Would a 250 gr .50 cal Lee REAL bullet work in a slow twist rifle - 1:60? Any other conical work well with a slow twist? :hmm: I know a 1:60 twist is best on round ball, just curious. Dave

    Mountain Man by Vardis Fisher

After reading this thread, I borrowed a copy of Mountain Man. Great read!. It came with a copy of Fair Land, Fair Land by A.B. Guthrie Jr. The same friend let me borrow his Jeremiah Johnson DVD - what a guy. Dave

    Ball starters

I tried my new (bought just cuz of this thread) short starter and the first balls I have ever cast earlier today. :haha: The starter did make it easier to load the gun. I'll be using it from now on. I mostly used the little starting nubbin, then seated the ball with the ram rod. My short...
