    Minimum shop tools

I am interested in starting my shop. Could someone help me figure out the minimum tools that I will need to build -- where to get them (beyond TOW) is appreciated. I have the schematics for building a gun vise from scratch and also an ingraving vise. This might be a good sticky. BBurg

    buying round balls

I just ordered some from Eddie May; 1000 0.490 round balls were $65, with s/h it was $73.95. He mentioned on the phone that he was going to Friendship. FYI BBurg

    3-volume Chambers/Ehlert videos

It starts with a pre-inletted stock, but all of the pieces needed to be finished (filed to remove sprues) and the inletted areas needed to be expanded. The inletting stocks will err on the side of too small than too large. I had been concerned with the degree of metal working, but the only major...

help -- flint POI on frizzen, general flint problems

I haven't had the chance to do any firing based on the EXTENSIVE and HELPFUL advice that I have gotten. I hope to do some shooting today, but we'll see.

help -- flint POI on frizzen, general flint problems

I am almost through my second can of Goex 3g. I use as small agate mortar and pestle to grind down for priming -- I get a bit to much lag when I use the 3g for the pan.

    3-volume Chambers/Ehlert videos

Hello, I wanted to recommend the Chambers/Ehlert video series to prospective kit builders. I got it directly from Chambers and it ran $60. I had gotten the Turpin video, but it does not go as deep into the inletting proceedure as Elbert does. I am more intimidated at the building process, as I...

help -- flint POI on frizzen, general flint problems

cptleo. You are right, I guess, about the "working in a vacuum" issue. I certainly don't have anyone standing over my shoulder telling me what to do, but I also don't have anyone standing over my shoulder (kindly) telling me when I am way off base. The good thing about the forum has been...

help -- flint POI on frizzen, general flint problems

I am NOT afraid of questions, or of showing my ignorance. I have found this forum to be one of the MOST helpful and LEAST judgemental of any of the special interest forums that I visit. Just my 2 centavos.

Oops, JD. I did neglect to mention the model -- it's a Lyman GPR. Thanks for the responses so far, both posts and PMs. BBurg

help -- flint POI on frizzen, general flint problems

Hello all, I was shooting yesterday and having problems with ignition. Part of it is the lock to vent placement (and the lock), but I believe that most of my problems were due to the flint. I have been figuring out my flintlock in a vacuum; meaning I have never seen another person shooting a...

    GPR breechplug

JD, I ended up putting the breech plug back, but the next time I take it off, I will measure. The next thing that I plan to do -- money permitting is get an L&R replacement lock and a 1/4-28 white lightning vent. BBurg

    Kudu horn for powder horn

Heinrich, You say that the horns are common -- What would it take to ship some to the US. I will be honest that I don't at this point know whether there are import restrictions into the US. PM me if you are willing. BTW Please have pity on an American the next time you drink some pinotage...

    Finished the Trade Gun

How much work was required to get the cast brass lock plate into such a pretty state?

    German Jaegers

Does anyone know how they made the bumping inside the acanthus on the cheek carving? That is a very neat effect that I'd like to duplicate.

    LYMAN Id

I purchased my GPR used and I was able to e-mail lyman with the serial number on the barrel and they were able to tell me what I wanted to know, which was the twist on the riflings. They responded with in a day or so.

    Lyman Customer Service

I had too many problems with my lyman stock ramrod, so I had the machineshop cut me a length of 3/8 brass rod with threading for the fixtures. I also drilled a hole at the top so that I can insert a nail for leverage to remove balls and stuck patches. It does add weight, is not authentic, but...
