    Striker steel question

I agree with Wick, we make em' out of 1095, W-1 or Black Diamond / Nicholson files..Quenched in water(if they are thick enough) or commercial fast quench..Nothing else has really come close..Something with around 1.0% carbon. Or more in the case of the files which are often around 1.20% to 1.27%...

    Tomahawk handle

Some folks will use a redish leather dye to get color..Im not sure how that would work since you have already dyed it..If you use Aqua Fortis to start with it will give you a nice reddish brown..Sorry i couldent be more help..

Trade Axe tutorial with pics (no electricity)

Honestly, I usually start welding at the bit and work backwards..Tap,tap,tap,tap...brush, flux, back in the fire...Not that its the right or wrong way, just the way Im use too.. I do like that style hammer..I got it for a christmas present..Very well balanced, swings like a much lighter...

Trade Axe tutorial with pics (no electricity)

Every now and again we do one of these for a re-enactor or a period correct stickler. I think its fun myself. *The Materials: A 9 1/2" long, 1 1/2" wide, 1/4" thick strap of 1018(wrought is correct but we didnt have any forged down to shape right then. * A 3/8" thick forged to wedge shaped piece...

    Knife steel

Two steel dealers we really trust and use a lot are kelly Cupples and Also Bruno..Great guys and they know what they are talking about..You can even get true L-6 from Aldo, either his pour or carpenter L-6..He's also the one who sells fine grain 1095 and 1084..

    Knife steel

Even is a file is 1095, its not "really" 1095..Ive saw spec analysis on at least four different brands(nicholson, heller, black diamond and a el cheapo brand) and all had between 1.22% and 1.30% carbon..The other elements varied quite a bit..Mn was anywhere from 0.14% to 0.34%

Wrought Iron with steeled poll and file bit

Pretty simple hawk/axe made from wrought. We jump welded a piece of 1065 on the face of the hammer poll. heat treated it like a hammer. The cutting edge was a piece of old black diamond file. If you look close you can still see the file teeth in the weld..

    Knife steel

5160 is a high alloy steel. Tough stuff, many leaf springs and coil springs are made from 5160. We use a lot of.. 1084 and 1084FG 1095 and 1095FG 15n20 (for damascus mostly) 5160 1075 1065 O-1 (for wood turning tools) Im a big fan of L-6 too..

    Talon Hawk

No, I dont blame you at all. RR spikes are a pain. If the cut is the tinest bit off it wont drift staright. Im sure you know what Im talking about. Ive messed up more spike hawks than anything else Ive done in the past  I like your press idea, what size bit are you using??

    Poll Tomahawk

Just curious, do you want it to look nice or look "forged" as in with a forged finish? Im jsut curious. You can almost always get a good hand forged hawk left with a "as forged" finish cheaper than one thtas been finished down to a nice smooth finish. A forge blackened finish resists rust fairly...

    Poll Tomahawk

Ive seen thier work and it looks to be good stuff. Are you looking for a hammer poll or just a good hawk with a square poll on the back? Somthing for use? Somethin' purty'? Keith Johnson (makes a barebones hawk for cheap) Stuart Willis Butch (Butches forge) All these guys make a nice hawk and...

Traditionally constructed Wrought Iron Spike hawk

The wrought came from a wagon rim. You can tell them by cutting them. When you cut a piece of wrought you can leave just a little bit of a "hinge", bend it to break it and it will spliter off like wood. Also wthout cutting it wrought will tend to have long striations in the rust pattern. Ill...

    Ye Olde Boocher Knife

We still use em'..Ontario butcher knives are still made from 1095 (high carbon steel) Not real purty' but effective non-the-less. I know a guy here locally that takes them and dresses them up. Burns and stains the handle then makes a primitive style sheath. Then re-sells them. Ive cut up plenty...
