    Patch Thickness Variation

I cut strips of 10 oz denim and chopped them into squares of 1.25" for my 62 cal rifle. With all the posts about Dutch's method and how important patch thickness was, I decided to measure the thickness of each patch. I mic'ed the center and used the clutch on the mic barrel to get even patch...

    Why, a patch knife...?

I agree. The knife must be very sharp to make an easy patch cut. My knives don't stay sharp very long so I bought a small pair if sissors at Walmart. They cut better than anything but a razor blade.

Soap & water doesn't cut it

I agree with many in this post. The black stuff is iron/steel. This is the same result you get when you sharpen a knife. It's not the stone or the oil.

how to measure inside barrel diameter?

I have a taper gage made by Starrett. It looks like a set of feeler gages but each leaf is tapered and scribed with a scale indicating width. The gage is No. 269B, has ten leaves and measures from .500 to 1.000. It is inserted into the muzzle and the width (diameter) is read on the scale at...

    Anti seize

I have been using Birchwood-Casey Choke Tube Lube. Just happened to have a tube on hand for my shotguns. Has always made the nipple and screw easy to remove.

    Cap lock ignition

I went through the same exercise when I started shooting . The problem was that the flash channel was getting restricted or plugged by BP fouling. I was not storing my rifle muzzle down after cleaning and the oil in the bore was running into the breechplug and collecting in the flash...

    GM drop-in barrel safety question

I pulled the underlug off a GM 62 SB (.610 bore)and measured the screw depth at .125 so it may be the case that GM adjusts the screw hole depth depending on caliber. Min wall on the .610 is .070 with .125 deep holes I bought this barrel to rework to a .620 smoothie. At .620 with the current...

    GM drop-in barrel safety question

I am looking for general guidelines from people who actually drill holes in barrels. How much wall thickness should be left intact? Does it vary with distance from the breech? Green mountain sells barrels that are like a piece of smooth pipe, no cuts or holes. The builder then cuts dovetails...

    GM drop-in barrel safety question

I have a GM 58 cal barrel that has been abused. The hook on the breech plug has had metal removed.; Looks like a rough tool was used like a chisel or a cutoff wheel, definately not a file. The underlug was also beat up. Since it won't fit well in any of my 1" TC stocks I thought if I had the...

Is jeff tanner really that fast?

I ordered a mold and it took two days to get to New York City and another five days to go from NYC to western PA. Great service from Jeff. USPS not so good.

    Olive Oil Patch Lube

Which Liquid Wrench product do you use? Last I looked there were 6 or 8 different items and all were in a new packaging that did not look like the stuff I bought 20 yrs ago. Would like to try it but not sure which one.

    Touch Hole Vent

I bought a Pedersoli Blue Ridge, and I am of the "take it apart" school. My liner had a screwdriver slot all the way across the face of the vent liner. I had to get a screwdriver bit that fit snug in the slot so I could get enough leverage to get it to move without stripping the slot. I came...

Tried a .490 PRB in my GM .54

I read your post and rushed to JoAnns. The lady I talked to said she never heard of it. I looked over their muslin selection and bought a yard of what they had. On the way home I stopped at a Super Walmart and found it in stock. The JoAnns material was .008 to .0085 thick and I could see...

    Dixie/pedersoli Kentucky?

My Blue Ridge is a nice gun except for the trigger pull. The set trigger works fine. When not set the trigger pull is about 10 lbs. I don't know how to fix this.

    how to remove bore pits

I lapped a .50 cal Investarms with the bullets from Bear Tooth Bullets using their lapping compound and their procedure. All are available from the website. The bullets are hollow base and the skirt expands to work the bottom of the groove. Bullets are .500 dia. (I also bought lapping...
