    CVA Mt. Rifle

Agree with Mooman. The Mountain Rifle locks were a better lock than any of the locks on their single-trigger guns. Because of the set triggers they were constructed with a bridle and fly. My percussion Mt. Rifle lock is still going strong after over 25 years. Admittedly the flintlocks were more...

T/C Patriot pistol first time out

Agree with this 100%. Too long a reach with conventional set triggers. TC got this one right.

    South Central Penn.

Dixon's Muzzleloading in Kempton, PA is muzzleloading heaven...one of the best in the country. It is about 15-20 minutes from Cabelas in Hamburg, right off Rt 22/78. You can Google the location...wouldn't be much of a detour off 81.

CVA .54 Hawken for the record books

Thanks much for the information. I have several of the old CVA muzzleloaders. I have gone to Deer Creek a number of times and their new website is a welcome addition.

    CVA 12 gauges

My CVA gobbler has a fixed modified choke. Very light gun...love the way it handles.

    Traditions Trapper-.50cal

Very muzzle heavy but a very good pistol. I got the flinter for hunting in PA and it has performed very well for me.

    Lyman Trade Rifle Barrel Wedge

You can try that. I had to do that at first to get the barrel and hook to mate perfectly as the fit was so tight. To get the wedge pin through both escutcheon plates requires a little fitting sometimes. Lyman inserted a 1 page addendum to my instruction booklet describing how to do this. Both my...

You say that like it was a bad thing!

    Blunderbuss kit

Ok, I'll admit it.....I bought one even though it is very obviously not "historically correct", or even close to it. There are three or four videos of it in action on YouTube posted by an outdoor writer name of Hovey. I just thought it was a cute little thing and looked to be a real hoot to...

    GPR Lock Mounting Screw

An L&R replacement lock would require a small amount of wood removal to fit. I would not recommend replacing the lock at this point for a couple of reasons. First, although the L&R flintlock is considered better than the Lyman flinter due to its having better geometry, your Lyman percussion lock...

Lyman GPR changes over the years

Just FYI, there are dozens of Lymans on the rack at Dixon's Muzzleloading. No quality issues with the ones I looked at recently. I have not doubt that somewhere along the line, someone will get one that has a problem, but it doesn't take much to get this much exaggerated internet chatter going...

    GPR

Another vote for purchasing Dutch's system. The best $20 you'll ever spend. It works, and an interesting read to boot.

    A Good Book?

Excellent book, highly recommended. Covers the whole gamut of the flintlock experience, from beginner to intermediate. Anyone who gets the book, even old worn out, grizzled types like myself, will benefit from reading it. P.S., it's available for purchase thru the NMLRA website.

Pedersoli Blue Ridge Rifle, or Kentucky Rifle?

Actually, my 70 year old eyeball seems to prefer a set of sights a little on the course side. I have come to prefer seeing a little light on either side of the front sight when placed in the rear sight notch, and a little thicker front sight also. My rifles used a "finer" sight picture when my...

What's it worth: CVA Kentucky Rifle?

There is an excellent, lengthy and well illustrated thread on this forum on reworking this rifle. Resulted in a slim and very pretty gun. If you do a little searching you will see the potential your CVA Kentucky has.

    Made in America

Dikman, you are correct. The earlier CVA Mountain Rifles had USA made barrels. Owner Dave Silk procured them from a variety of domestic sources including Douglas initially. The TC Hawken should really be viewed as a fine quality rifle on its own. It was never intended to be a replica of any...

how to prevent stuck RR syndrome?

Are you using a cleaning brush with brass bristles by any chance? If so, try one with plastic bristles if you want to use a brush. The stiff brass bristles don't want to reverse direction on the way out and jam easily.

    Pedersoli Frontier

I have read opinions by those who know much more than I about the various schools of rifle design that the Frontier is in the general style of the Federal period, i.e., post-Revolution to very early 1800s.

    Cva plainsman quality?

Generally, if the gun has double set triggers it is a bridled lock. Even on the newer guns.

    cva barrel

Since the bolster no longer interlocks with the breech plug, I would guess that the situation you describe has weakened the breeching system. It's worth noting that CVA originally stipulated that any tampering with the breech would have voided all warranties.
