    Debating on a flintlock pistol

Got a chance to handle an original An. XIII French pistol last night. Overall length is about 13.5-14 inches. That's quite the difference from the 19.5 inch pistols I was thinking of getting. I suppose the longer ones are more accurate but I can see them being awkward, especially from horseback...

    Debating on a flintlock pistol

I have a rifled Kentucky pistol already, it handles nicely and is accurate. I want a smoothbore. It's true, the English dragoon pistol and older style French cavalry pistol are both pretty long, about 3 inches longer than the French 1763 or 1773 model. I've wondered about how they would...

    Debating on a flintlock pistol

Hello everyone, Wasn't sure if this should go in smoothbore or handguns but went with the latter eventually. I've been thinking of getting a smoothbore flintlock pistol and more or less have it narrowed down to the British heavy dragoon, likely from Flintlock.repair.com or the 1733 French...

    Northwest Passage

There's a LOTM movie from the 30s that wasn't bad and was the inspiration for the modern movie. If it wasn't the exact same screenplay it was pretty close.

    Northwest Passage

That's similar to the BBC "Last of the Mohicans" when they used their "flintlock" percussion cap muskets! On the few that vaguely looked like flintlocks they didn't even prime or close the pans yet somehow they fired. The production values weren't great but the acting was good.

    Northwest Passage

I think the St. Francis raid might make another good movie but it wouldn't necessarily have to be based on Roberts' book. Maybe Brumwell's "White Devil" and that would be a great movie title. The Spencer Tracy movie name was always confusing because as you noted, finding the Northwest Passage...

GRRRR Brit versions of American History

"History is a set of lies agreed upon." Napoleon (and we can probably find earlier people with the same sentiment)

GoPro film of shooting a Sea Service flintlock pistol

Sigh. Always wanted a Martini-Henry. Watched Zulu and read Jim Corbett's Jungle Lore too many times!

    Matchlock movie from Spain

The series of novels by Arturo Perez Reverte is pretty good. He's an excellent novelist and he does one of these volumes between his more "serious" works.

    military musket velocity?

It was quite common for officers not far behind the line to get hit by spent balls. I can think of accounts of Wellington, Napoleon and Ney all being hit by spent balls and receiving minor injuries that didn't take them out of action. Sometimes the spent ball resulted in bruising, possibly a...

    What ae you paying

Only local place that carries it now has it at $24.99 a pound--was $23.95 last summer. I bought a pound of Schutzen for $15 in the fall while passing the Maine Powder House (normally it's $16 a pound but they didn't have change) but that's not local. That's still the price they show on their...

    Loading the musket

I haven't bought any yet because I still have several packages but I think this what you're referring to. You can still buy onion skin typing paper. And yes, it's great for paper cartridges and paper airplanes! Onion skin paper

    New flintlock movie Comming

Judging by the trailer and what I could find about it I would say it's a low budget production that will go straight to DVD or with a limited theater run.

    fusils on the plains

Dan, The riflemen in the Revolution I'm not disputing. I already mentioned Morgan's men at Saratoga, though as I noted the ordinary farmer responding with the militia didn't have them, only specialized units. But it's 15 years between the end of the F&I and the Revolution during which rifles...

    fusils on the plains

"Finally, in the east where ranges are "short"... It needs to be pointed put that the natives had no qualms about fighting musket armed soldiers. But rifle armed frontiersmen were another matter and mass desertions of Indian allies in both the F&I and Revolutionary Wars occurred as the result of...

Loyalist arms and the 1768 Charleville musket review

High velocity musket rounds??? And that guy is a range master... 9mm or .45 rounds commonly used on the range have a much higher velocity.

Loyalist arms and the 1768 Charleville musket review

Just curious, why did your local range turn you away when you showed up with a musket?
