    60 grs FFFg for Deer

60 gr will be fine. I hunt with a .54 TVM Earley Virginia rifle with a 26" barrel I use 70gr FFF have taken 5 deer with it. Have yet to recover a ball. More powder may be more power but what do I want? If it is accurate in your rifle and you know your limits. For me with iron sights I stay 75...

    austin and halleck

I bought one new from Dixie it did not come with a manual. A good shooting rifle. Killed 3 deer with it. Later replaced it with a TMV as my hunting rifle. I loaned it to a friend who has hunted with it for the last few years.

Return or Keep - Which Would You Do ?

Sadley the problems seem to be part of the design of the pistol. I have wanted one for several years but can not talk my self into paying the price with the problems.

    Short Starter in Possibles Bag?

I have a loop on my bag strap that works well. I must confess I tend to use a speed loader and the starter in my coat pocket with a primer flask. Not pc but does not get hung up. :surrender:

Black powder people a few questions RE: flintlocks

I agree 120 gr is a lot of powder. I use 65 in my .54. You can only burn so much powder in a barrell. all excess is blown out the bore. As already said. Start at 50 and work up. 2f is suposed to be used in rifles 50 & up, my .54 likes 3f best. Have to shoot the rifle and find out what it likes.

    Old CVA

The quality of the CVA depends on when and where it was made. I have a Hawkin my parents gave me for christmas in 1972-3 it is marked "Made in USA" and it is a very well made rifle. Did have to replace the main spring 10 years ago. She has 8 tacks for deer under the cheek piece. Do not hunt with...

    Help school a rookie!

Welcome lots of good info on this board. Start by cleaning the rifle, remove all oils. The gunk that bills up in the bore is made harder to deal with whin it reacts with oil. I use bore butter, several other products work well also. Get some quality flints. Enjoy
