    Rate of Twist

I have seen a 1 in 32 twist shoot RB extremely well with substantially reduced loads. This would be ok for plinking and what-not but not good for hunding. I have a .54 with a 1 in 66 twist that shoots PRBs most excellently and also shoots an improved Mini Ball just as good. There are many...

    Poor warm weather accuracy

What kind of patch and lube are you using? When you shoot in the cooler weather, does your accuracy fade as the barrel gets warmer? What size ball are you using? :: ::

More Natural Lube 1000 = 40shots 2F with no wiping

It was always my understanding that when using the boiling water method to clean that the boiling water was the final rinse. I use this method when I am going to put a gun up for an extended period of time. I keep pouring the boiling water down the barrel until the barrel gets so hot as to...

    percussion making your own

I did that a few years ago and the only problem that I had was that every now and again when one did not go off, the nipple would get clogged with the plastic. I have a Forester Snap-o-cap I bought off of E-bay and it also works well but is very time consuming as was mentioned earlier. I like...

More Natural Lube 1000 = 40shots 2F with no wiping

I've been using the stuff on pillow ticking in my Dixie, .50 calibre poorboy for several years, have shot all day without cleaning. Normally use about 60gr of 2f goex. I'll keep using it until it stops working and I always try it in a new gun. Have much faith in it. :m2c: :redthumb:

    Experimenting with bleach......

I'm really not sure on your procedure but I know a little about your bleach. That stuff is toxic and will put a hurt'in on your hind-parts. Be careful! One small point, the potency of that bleach deminishes with age and heat as does most bleaches. Again, be careful!! :m2c:

    New .54/Green Mountain Questions

You are going to love that rifle, it will be your new best buddy. With a 1 in 70 twist it's likely that you need 100+ grains of powder to stabilize that bullet. Don't be afraid to try FFG or FFFG powder. Mine actually uses less powder and at least equal accuracy with FFFG. Another option I...

    Graf Powder

I was just reading an advertisment about Graf Black Powder. Distributed by Graf and Sons. $9.99 a pound in the ad. Has anybody messed with this stuff yet?

    Shooting in a brisk wind

Personally, unless it becomes absolutly necessary, (hunting situations), I don't do much shoot in a wind that stout. Especially since I like to practice shooting offhand. I found that in a wind like that it's easy to develope bad habits due to compensating for the wind. Even when bench...

Barrel blueing, How traditional, How Much

Contrary to many traditionalist, I like a blued barrel with either iron, brass or silver furniture. I was wandering how many original builders blued there steel. I read that some gunsmiths in southwestern Virginia, eastern Tenn. and Kentucky were blueing in the late 1700's. What would be a...

    KIK Powder

I tried KIK a couple of years ago. I found that the FFG KIK was equal to FFFG Goex. Used the same volumn of the KIK as the Goex. The FFFG KIK was to hot for anything I have except for pan primer. I was burning thru most of my patches. I do recommend the KIK FFG. It was clean burning...

    GPR barrels

Before you buy another barrel, consider trying an Improved Mini ball. You can get a Lee mold for under twenty bucks. I just dip a cold bullet in some melted bore butter/wax combination, just for a second. I have an old Ithica kit gun I put together, 32 inch barrel, 1 in 66 twist, 415gr mini...

    Lyman Trade Rifle

Have you tried out an improved Mini Ball? I have a old kit gun put out by Ithica with a 1 in 66 twist that will rag an 1 and a half hole with 415gr mini and 105gr of FF goex. Dipped the cold bullet into hot lube. Easy to load, packs a mean punch and shoots well.

Wrinkled balls from an RCBS steel mould

Stumpy, normally I would agree with you about the lead temp. In this case however I am using a double mould and only the cavity next to the handle is giving me problems. Thanks again.

Wrinkled balls from an RCBS steel mould

First, what's the camp name? Second, you hit the nail on the head with that thread, its got to be the oil around the screw that holds the sprue cutter. I have know about the candle soot for aluminum moulds but have never tried it on my steel moulds, I'll try it next time. Thanks for the help...

    The Dreaded Flinch

Excellent, do you try and keep your eyes open thru the entire shot as part of the follow thru?

Wrinkled balls from an RCBS steel mould

That's the way I do. I kinda figured that I got some kinda contamination in the cavity but I don't know what is or how to det it out. What do you think?

    The Dreaded Flinch

I've been shooting a "Flinch Lock" since about April this year. I converted my Dixie Tenn. Mnt. Rifle with a replacement lock from Dixie. Sweet little lock. Anyway, I'm hitting pretty good, but with a few exceptions. On the occasion that the ignition fails, I have a tendency to drop the...

Wrinkled balls from an RCBS steel mould

I have been making balls with this mould for several years now with outstanding results. After every session I let it cool and oil it with WD40 before putting it up. Before using it again, I clean the mould with denatured alchohol before heating it up. The last time I used it there was a...

    hawken 209 conversion

All the advise I read was sound. Have you considered switching powders. Black powder will ignite at 300 degrees F, Pyrodex at 600 degrees F. I am not sure at this time about Triple 7. Also consider a finer granulation of powder. Finer powder may be required to move into the ignition area...
