    Chronic Wasting Disease

In SE MN we have virtually unlimited harvest now. Five deer and additionally special CWD hunts which are unlimited buck or doe kill. Just keep buying CWD tags and killing. In addition, federal sharp shooters kill deer with night vision over bait. Now, very few people do that, but it shows...

    Chronic Wasting Disease

"...CWD proteins (prions) likely spread between animals through body fluids like feces, saliva, blood, or urine..." https://www.cdc.gov/prions/cwd/transmission.html#:~:text=Scientists%20believe%20CWD%20proteins%20(prions,of%20soil%2C%20food%20or%20water. The reason DNRs, like Minnesota, make...

    Chronic Wasting Disease

Regarding burning prions: "Incineration of prion-contaminated material is considered the most effective method of disposal. Combustion at 1,000°C can destroy prion infectivity, however, low infectivity remains after treatment at 600°C. Despite its effectiveness, incineration may not be a...

    First Flintlock Deer

Not sure how I missed this one for weeks now! Great story. Having hunted in air temps as low as -25F, and wind chills well below that, I can understand having hands and feet no longer sending signals to the brain. Worst is when the fluid on your eyeballs is freezing making your lids stick when...

    Chronic Wasting Disease

Here are some quotes from various medical sources: "CWD is similar to “mad cow disease” in cattle, scrapie in sheep, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans." "Is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease the same as mad cow? CJD is not the same as mad cow disease or CWD. All three diseases are in the...

    Fake Hawken Rifle ?

It would be very interesting to see a rubbing of the very faint stamping above the bold and crisp S Hawken stamping. There is definitely something there.

    Minnesota grouse hunt

In my neck of the woods in SE MN grouse are WAY down from what they were years ago, which is amazing considering much more woods was pastured then vs brushy now. Did your dog run into a fence? Looks like a deep cut under the eye in the one pic. Also, for anyone with dogs in the field in...

    WV Here I come!

Wife and I were in that area (New River Gorge) for three days in Sept. WV is rugged & gorgeous country! Not as physically bad as the Rockies due to lower altitude, but every bit as steep. We really enjoyed our time there and will definitely be back. Almost heaven? Close enough for us...

    First successful muzzleloader hunt

Yep, will need all of that for final aesthetics, but as-is will give you the chance to try it out. When all done, please report back on your results and post a pic of your final finished peep. :thumb:

    Sharps style ladder sight

I have one that came on my Sharps, but with my aging eyes it's hard enough to shoot at over 50 yards with completely open sights much less ranges exceeding 100 yards. So, no. Don't use one on muzzleloaders, but if my eyes were great and I was in long range competitions, it might be a good choice.

    Funny but true

Yep...looked what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. Major catastrophies will be hell in metros where people are 100% dependent on the system for food and warmth.

    First successful muzzleloader hunt

A rear peep can also be as simple as a small thumb screw with a hole drilled in it screwed into a threaded hole in the tang with a small knurled nut to lock it at the right height. Windage via front sight.

    2023 Muzzleloader Season

I now enjoy small game more than deer hunting. It's leisurely...just a nice walk in the woods. I almost always see game and get one or two for the pot. Not as much work dragging, cleaning, cutting, and packaging. A great "gentleman's" hunt! In addition, in late season I have the woods all...

    First successful muzzleloader hunt

While the rifle wouldn't be pre-drilled for it, any kind of tang or short vernier would work fine. Track of the Wolf shows many of those in stock. All kinds of sight suppliers would also have a variety of tang mounted peeps that would work. You don't have to limit yourself to the...

Bad Shot Leaves a Hard Tracking Job

Here's a new way to find wounded deer. I'm not a fan of drones, and I'm not sure their use in my state would be legal since one cannot use electronic aids, but this could certainly work. A guy in Wisconsin has a drone with thermal imaging. Once he spots a deer sized animal he takes the...

Rifle Recommendations for a New ML Hunter

Regarding caps...another place to look is local "farm stores" that also have sporting goods. I have many times gotten caps for a very good price at my local Farm & Fleet store.

Rifle Recommendations for a New ML Hunter

Got my first deer with a flintlock

What a morning! Congratulations. :thumb: Safety belts should always be used and attached before stepping onto a treestand. Many falls result in an equipment failure like you related, so a hunter needs to secured before getting on the stand. I had a friend go down almost 30 feet. I...
