    Lock panel shaping

What tool(s) do you use to shape the front of the lock panel, namely from the pan forward and down toward the bottom?

Have you ever considered the cost of doing business

Any retired guys at least supplementing income building guns? I always knew building guns for a living would never be realistic, but my goal has been to get good enough so that by the time I am retired I can use my hobby for a little extra cash. Or at least make enough to cover my costs to...

    Fowler butt plate screws

I've looked at a few gun shows over the past couple weeks and they seem to vary. Some guns with the screw practically in the middle, others towards the bottom. Best I can tell, there's no right or wrong.

    Fowler butt plate screws

I like it where it is with this particular butt plate. I put it a little higher on rifles when the heel screw is on the top, but with the heel screw on the crown of the bend being visible from the back, I didn't want the screws to appear too close together. The camera angle doesn't quite do it...

    Fowler butt plate screws

Well, I used the #10 x 1-1/2 ovals that I had in stock, and looks about right. Does anyone secure the tang of the butt plate with a pinned lug? This butt plate did not come with a lug for that purpose but I could easily add one. Is that worth the effort?

    Fowler butt plate screws

Eric, that’s funny I have done the same thing with multiple plugs and attempts at drilling the holes, and that’s with using a center bit. 🙄

    Fowler butt plate screws

I have #10 screws but they are smaller than the ones I used on my rifle. However, from that post above it looks like #10 is appropriate.

    Fowler butt plate screws

What size screws would be appropriate for an english fowler butt plate?

    Darken engraved brass?

That's typically how I do it, flat black paint and wipe off, but wasn't sure if that would be right on a brass patchbox.

    Darken engraved brass?

Is it more appropriate to darken engraved brass on an early style longrifle, or leave it to patina naturally?

Sight picture with a double hammer gun

Thanks for the replies. The question isn’t about how to shoot a shotgun, but whether or not the hammers physically block your vision as you acquire and see the target. It sounds like the answer to that is no.

Sight picture with a double hammer gun

When aiming a flintlock or percussion rifle, the hammer is on strong side or outside of the gun, and like most people I close my weak side eye. I always tell new shooters who are worried about seeing the hammer that if you are practicing good fundamentals and focusing on the front sight post...

Hunting from a tree saddle with a flintlock LR

So I’ve done it a few times since posting this thread. It isn’t ideal, but can be done. The long rifle and movement associated with handling it gives up much of the extra concealment and stealth that you get using a tree saddle. When in the saddle, I usually lay the rifle across my lap. My...

    Chambers English Fowler Completed!

Very nice, you did a great job! How long did it take? I just started the same kit last week. What stain did you use and how did you handle the ramrod? I believe mine came with 3/8 rod but the thimbles measure 5/16 and even a 5/16 rod is a little too big for the hole.

    Elmers Stainable Wood Glue

Yep, I know what can happen if the lens of glue doesn't take the stain, but curious how the "stainable glue" might do in that regard.

    Elmers Stainable Wood Glue

Does anyone have any experience with Elmers Stainable Wood Glue? I need to glue a tiny piece for a chip out repair and came across this stuff. I have used Elmers Wood Glue MAX before, but even though that says it’s stainable and paintable, I’ve found that it only works with pigmented stains...

Hey, time to show your first build!!

I think it looks good from far, but far from good. Thanks for the compliment though! :D Actually I have no formal training beyond a couple of shop classes many years ago in high school. I am handy and there are a lot of great books and videos out there for reference, but I couldn't have done...

    How to sharpen this scraper?

I played around with it some and I think I got it. As said above, I got better results putting the bevel on the front side (opposite handle) and drawing it to me when sharpening, opposite a knife blade. I held it upside down with the front edge pointing away from me and drew it back towards...
