    Yes or No on tacks

    I think it looks tacky...

    New to building

I would go with a flinter, far more fun than a cap gun! I was in your shoes a couple years ago. It is an intimidating project, but nothing a person with some amount of mechanical and woodworking skills can't handle. I had very limited woodworking experience and both of mine turned out pretty...

    To upgrade or not upgrade?

Spikebuck, There ain't no back-woodsman mountain man carrying around a beautiful rifle like that, unless he stole it or found it... Very nice.

    Curly maple staining

I would use ferric nitrate crystals and dissolve in water then follow same method as standard AF, seal with Chambers Traditional Oil Finish. Easy peasy... You can do some test pieces with different ratios of water to crystals, i ended up with 4:1 for both of my highly figured maple stocks...

I got one of these. Made cutting in the straight line a breeze...

    Building an Edward Marshall Rifle

Looks great Dave! The pic of the acorns on the trigger guard gave me chills... I remember when I did my E.M. and that trigger guard gave me fits, broke the first one and that inletting was a challenge for me... I'd love to be a fly on the wall and watch you work.

When to test fire a new build?(flintlock)

Well technically the stock isn't done until all that is done anyway. But you can fire it whenever you want to! Not gonna hurt anything. Heck you can take barrel itself, install liner and fire it off with a match if you want to. I wouldn't do it though...

NEW (old) RIFLE - MAJOR PROBLEMS - NEED HELP & ADVICE!

The Twilight Zone is a place that exists at any moment of time, of space or of mind....but always when you least expect it. When you find yourself in this realm of unlimited possibility, be careful what you say or do. The right decisions may help you find your way back out....sometimes with...

When to test fire a new build?(flintlock)

I've only done 2 rifles, so go with what the above guys do as they have the experience. But I waited until they were 100% finished aside from filing the site. Was a satisfaction thing for me to fire it when done.

    Chamber's York build

I wouldn't worry about the surface rust until you are done with the gun and ready for finishing. Cold blue the barrel instead of browning, imo.

    Help with dovetailing

While it may seem a daunting task, it is quite simple once you get going on it. I use a hack saw to remove the mass then the 2 sided triangle file for finishing. Make it a little tight and expand from there, much easier than other way around.

    Building an Edward Marshall Rifle

I am very much looking forward to this one, but wish you would have built it 2 years ago when I was doing my Ed... Not that it would've mattered all that much, but would have been fun.

    Chamber's York build

I did not know that you pinned the barrel already, not the end of the world though. Since I missed that I went through the whole string again. I must say, the painted toenails are a nice touch... Missed that the first go around as well!

    Chamber's York build

I did a York last year from Chamber's and had the same issue, as a matter of fact I had the same issue with the Edward Marshall kit from them as well. Just moved the barrel back, no big deal at all. That was the only issue that I've had with Chamber's kits. Both of mine have swamped barrels...

Quality Kit for first time builder

Yes, you have to drill and tap for the plate/lock and tang bolt into trigger plate. Not as complicated as you would think, just take your time. As far as stocks go, (I shouldn't say this because I'm waiting for one) the stocks I've gotten from Chamber's have had very little issues and they...

Quality Kit for first time builder

If you want easy and quality you will have to go with a Kibler in smoothbore or be patient for his fowler to come out. If you have some talent with your hands a Chamber's would do you well. I've done 2 and waiting on an English Fowler from Chamber's. I never even touched a flintlock prior to...

When building a rifle from a blank or kit, are there any steps U dislike?

Waiting for it to get delivered... The last 2 years I've ordered a kit from Chamber's as my Christmas present from my wife. Learned that it takes a lot more time that I anticipated to get it here, but both have been delivered a week or 2 after Christmas. This year I ordered much earlier, in...

    Chamber's York build

Then you are in the same boat that I was in. I used reference pictures, the knowledge here and the bibles of long rifle building as my guide. The good news is that with the internet it makes it much easier.

    Chamber's York build

I finished a Chamber's York in 40 cal last winter, I thought that was light, but the 50 will shoulder like a dream. I don't want to clog your post with pics, so here they are if interested. (6) 40 Caliber York Completed | The Muzzleloading Forum I'm a novice, so will leave the critiquing to the...
