    Getting anxious about finishing build

Do you guys ever get antsy and anxious about finishing a rifle so you can shoot it? Mine is 1+year in and I'm working on the patchbox. It's my first ML and of course first build. From a plank. It's been a long journey. I've slowed down over the last 4 months due to life. I can't see being...

    Real Hawken or not?

I think the fence redirected the cap and powder blast to that portion that looks scorched. Is that black area between the fence and the tang burnt wood? If so, I take my comment back about the breech plug and fence being one piece. Can't really tell what the fence is connected to. Maybe...

    Real Hawken or not?

Id say it is authentic. The breech is interesting. If you look really closely at the picture of the barrel tang, you can see on the right side at the breech where is appears the fence is part of the breech plug and tang. It's certainly isn't a converted flintlock... Not enough holes on the...

    My drill press is junk

I bought the press used, very cheaply. I tried everything I could think of to get it to drill where I punched. The quill has a ton of play so it just likes to jump somewhere other than my mark when drilling. I'll be replacing it sometime. Nearly anything would be a step up

    How old are ya?

Well, shooting MLs, I'm not sure I can say I have been or am. I've shot BP for a couple years now. Been working on building a flintlock the last year. Hopefully I'll be sending balls downrange soon.

What historical rifle would you most like to shoot?

I would like to shoot George Washington's rifle made by J P Beck (Beck Flintlocks) and the supposed William Ashley Hawken rifle.

    Proof Hawken made a flint

Here's a little insight into the whereabouts of many rifles from the 1800s. He also mentions a couple times in this book that the Hawken rifles were in the best on the plains.... Ruxton didn't necessarily make this up even though his book was fictional. There's still no undebatable proof...

    Lock question for builders

I have a Chambers late ketland lock where the hammer lines up to the frizzen the same way. I was told that his typical of the late ketland and to just move the flint over a bit in the jaws

    Halfstock, Flintlock Hawkens??

Do you have any links or pictures of that Augustin Lacome rifle? I don't think I've heard of that one. Sounds neat.

    62cal hawken

Their big caliber heavy charge guns were English sporting rifles... Much better buttplates for that than a Hawken! I'd probably try it once in a Hawken. Only once 😂

    62cal hawken

I think you would get a plenty efficient powder burn out of a 36-in barrel in that caliber. There are a couple of guys on another forum who are both older and have spent many years shooting larger bore muzzleloaders very accurately, one of whom is one of the best Hawken rifle builders to my...

    62cal hawken

There are Hawken rifles with swamped barrels. If I were going to do another full stock, I'd get a tapered barrel 40" long. I'm working on a 36" 58cal full stock (not a Hawken) and wish I'd have gotten a longer barrel. In my opinion, the aesthetics of a full stock are just not as pleasing...

Which state is the best for ML?

Illinois isn't too bad an option, although general gun regulation is stronger than other states. You can use a ML during the regular firearm deer season in Nov and there is also a ML specific season. This is how it was last time I lived there 7 years ago. I don't think it's changed. There's...

Any chance we'll see powder from Goex in 2023 ?

I am excited to get some more olde eynsford. I also hope that this owner works to make regular Goex more consistently high quality than it sounds like goex has been through the years.

    Coffee

There is a few sentences in the book Wah-to-yah and the Taos Trail (1846?) Where the author describes how they roasted and ground their beans out on the frontier that year. I will have to see if I can find that section and I will post it here.

    Coffee

I used to roast all my own coffee and now only do it once in awhile. Sweetmarias.com has very good green beans. I use this very period correct popcorn popper to roast my beans 😂 warm up for a few minutes out in ~3oz... Enough to where it will just rotate slowly from the circulation of the air...

    Barrel channel slack removing.

@EC121 , you used gorilla glue? The epoxy or the CA glue? It's hard to tell in your picture, but it looks like you just kept the glue away from the barrel lug inlets in the channel, correct?
