How to get dull finish browning a barrel ?

For neutralizing I use store bought ammonia....the small parts are submerged in it and the bbl is swabbed a few times . Found baking soda didn't work as quickly and didn't completely stop the rusting......Fred

How to get dull finish browning a barrel ?

Let the browning solution work a little longer...it'll then lightly etch the bbl and yield a duller finish. I've used LMF on all my builds and never had one that was shiny.....Fred

Ram Rod Hole drifted up to barrel channel

I sometimes wonder that if a RR hole doesn't end up as intended , that many times the problem is w/ the RR groove. .....either it's pointing in the wrong direction, especially w/ a swamped bbl or the blind end of the RR groove isn't properly finished and starts the drill pointing upwards. I...

    Opinions please

Had a crack that was 10 inches long...it was the thin web at the muzzle end. First off stained the inside of the crack, let dry and then applied "super glue" which disolved the stain The waxed bbl was installed and the whole thing was wrapped w/ surgical tubing. The repair wasn't noticeable at...

Oil based stain or water based ?

I use the water based stains from Jim Klein and the first applied is an orange toner which yields a yellow undertone. The toner is followed w/ either the reddish brown or the dark brown or both......Fred

    Glue for Forend Cap

When using epoxy w/ inserts, I don't depend on adhesion to retain them. A "V" needle file is used to put a groove at various places on the edges of the perimeter of the insert and these grooves "lock in" the insert. Grooves are even filed in on 1/32" thick inserts This really retains them...

    Glue for Forend Cap

I just use whatever epoxy I've got and when set, drill a hole from the bottom stock flat and use a copper rivet...like the oldtimers......Fred

    Soft jaws for vise

I also use inverted 3/4" thick "U" shaped plywood w/ 2 plies of soft leather....the gripping is excellent and they're removable. They rest on the horizontal vise screw cover and don't fall out because of the "U" shape. The vise is a Starrett and was my only vise until a few yrs...

    Butt plate gaps

Bplates require patience to achieve an all around fit. When first starting, I use a coarse samd paper wheel on the Dremel and finish w/ a finer grit for finishing. The entire fitting is nearly done w/ a Dremel...except the radius at the junction of the shoe and tang... where a file is used...

    Touch hole liner too long

First off I use a White Lightning limer and measure the length of the tapped hole and remove metal from the bore end of the liner when it's out of the bbl. I then screw the liner in until "home" and see if any liner protrudes into the bore....if it does, the liner is unscrewed and more metal is...

Question on issues with breech plug fitting

I've never built a MLer w/ 5/8" long threaded plug. ....always made them 1/2" long. To ensure the end of the plug contacted the shoulder, I bought 2 taps for both of the tap sizes I used and made a flat bottom tap out of them to ensure that the threaded plug contacted the shoulder w/o a big...

    LMF Tips and Tricks

The only items attached to the bbl when browning are the tang and the bbl lugs. ,,,I don't brown the bottom and oblique flats. The 2 sights are browned more easily when done separately. A cloth patch is barely saturated w/ LMF and lightly drawn down the bbl from the tang....the patch is...

    Barrel finish?

After the draw filing is done, all the flats and corners are lightly sanded w/ 220 grit paper....there are some burrs at the corners......Fred

    Source for molding scrapers

I contour the design on single edged razorblades. A larger sweeping curve is done on a disk sander but mostly use a Dremel w/ grinding wheels to suit. The contour is then smoothed or resharpened w/ various grit stones......Fred

Diving into a plank. My Chisels and files

One important tool when working from a blank is a bandsaw....didn't see one mentioned. Laying out an accurate stock outline and then sawing on the line eliminates a lot of wood removal. My first blank was cut w/ a Skillsaw and my wife was watching me make the cuts and finally said...."I'm not...

    TC Hawken reworked

Nice job on the modification.... A .50 TC Hawken was my first MLer and it started out being my squirrel rifle built from a kit until I built a .45 LR . It has killed deer and elk in addition to snowshoe hares and cottontails. W/ the big elk loads {425 gr Buffalo Bullets} I rec'd some...

3 Questions on Browning a Barrel

I brown bbls w/ the sights removed and use hardware store ammonia straight from the bottle to neutralize....does a much better job. I would drill the TH prior to browning....the browning solution isn't slathered on so shouldn;t get into the TH......Fred

Building a hawken from a kit.

Shown below is a Pecatonica Hawken that I built a few yrs ago. Upon receiving the kit I noticed that the lock inlet was mislocated so I drove to Pecatonica. They verified that it indeed was wrong and carved a new stock while I waited,....it was a grade 5 which is their top grade and replaced the...

    Jim Chambers vs. TVM Kit

I've built 2 Chambers' Early Lancasters and they assembled w/ only a couple each of minor errors. ....considered pretty good for a parts set. Also did a Hawken from Pecatonica and initially found the lock inlet to be mislocated. Went down there and they cut me a new precarve while I waited and...

    Glue advice

On thin cracks I've always used a runny super glue. First off a stain is put into the crack and when dry, the runny super glue is applied...it dissolves and absorbs the stain and the crack nearly disappears.....Fred
