I have been trapping off and on since the late 70's. When i was a teenager i trapped beaver and fox, it paid for more guns and ammo and my first car. Last year i went on a period trapping expedition alone for a week in the mountains using only 1750's period gear. In the one week i caught 9...

Grandpa's Cannon -- Need Some Advice

Nice little cannon. It appears to have been profesionaly made. it looks like a line gun from the 1880s in design but they were much larger than yours. I would clean it up, make a new wheel to replace the lost one. Take it out to a safe place and load it up, i would use a fuse so you can be at a...

    bare ball 12ga best shoting?

The first thing to do is measure the bore diameter, A 12ga should be .729 in.. I think the .690 ball is too small, unless you have a chocked barrel.I use a .705 ball in all my 12ga guns, and use a thick patch lubed with bore butter. I get good accuracy out to 50 yards. if i am shooting alot, as...

    cannon ball cost

The price of $275.00 is normal for any CW artilley shell, thats average for a 12 lb ball. Some go for $1000.00 depending on who made it and where it was recovered. A good source for priceing/buying CW stuff is "The Horse Soldier" in Gettysburgh.

    Pedersoli Brown Bess questions....

The ball and patch size would depend on the actual bore diameter. My bess is marked .75cal but the actual bore size is .729. I use a .705 ball and a heavy linnen patch, 90gr of 3F for the load. It will print a 1 hole group at 25 yards. I would recomend after a good cleaning, get some 4O...

Using a millitary musket as a shotgun

I use my Brown bess with both shot and round ball. My shot load is 1 1/4 oz of 7 1/2 shot and 90gr of 3F. I use a 1/2" fiberwad over the powder then the shot load and toped with another 1/2" wad. This load is great for grouse and rabits out to 30 yards. For round ball i use 90gr 3F and a thick...
