    TOTW, $ going NUTS

because they are a business and need to make a profit. if you haven't noticed the prices for just about everything have been going up the last couple of years. At least they don't scam people or price gouge when there are shortages.

    Barrel makers

FCI barrel claims to use different profiles for the various smooth caliber. I would give him a call and find out for sure.

    Block plane

planes are really great to use. I use a scrub plane, router plane, a 3/4" rabbet plane that I made round to shape the barrel channel, and a spokeshave. simple to use, quiet, fast, and makes shavings not dust.

    Slugging a bore?

I would clean the barrel. then carve a short piece of dowl to work as a ramrod and stick it a couple inches in the muzzle with a patch to seal the bore. then pour lead in and let cool. this is very similar to how a lead lap is made for the barrel.

    SOLD Cabela's Haken 58 cal.

Hell I am selling my Cabela's 58 caliber Hawken. I just don't shoot it so it is time for it to go. The lock and set triggers work without issue. Barrel is 15/16 across the flats and is 28" long. has some light pitting on the outside by the breech. The rifling is in good condition bright with no...

    Hawken Shop Kit

it is something I would be willing to do but am hesitant because I am still learning. I make mistakes that I should really know better than to do. if someone is paying money the job should be done correctly.

    File recommendation for sight dovetail?

I have one of those safe sided triangle files. it does work but is tedious. I have started making dovetails using a hacksaw, fine file, and a cold chisel. mark the center section of the dovetail and the thickness of the base. saw out the material and then smooth with the file. lay the saw over...

    darken incsied carving?

Watching some recent I love muzzleloading videos and I have noticed that the incised carving on the rifles is visibly darker than the finish around it. Creates a great contrast and lets you see the details better. I was wondering how this was done. Is it wood burning or using a different stain...

    Shooting Rest?

a bag full of sand or something to support the forward hand. there have been a few people who have sighted in their rifles with the barrel on a rest and then had the group shift or open up once they shoot offhand. pressure on the barrel can change things.

    Deciding What To Shoot

I shoot at a public range that only has one shooting lane. so if someone is already there you can either wait or shoot at the same distance as them. so I typically bring a cap and ball revolver, a 32 cal rifle to shoot at 25 yards, and a 45 cal to shoot at either 50 or 100 yards. that way I can...

    Not swamped but

round bottom seems to be easier to clean. for a 32 I would go with either a 48 or 32 twist. I wonder what the weight would be for a octagon to round 32 caliber barrel. with small caliber barrels can be surprisingly heavy. in my experience 48 twist likes charges of 20-30 grains and the 32 twist I...

    45 cal proof load

do you have a reason for the concern over the safety of the barrel? heavy rust, pitting, cracks, signs of gas leakage, bulge, or improperly fit breech plug?

    New build

hey I am building something similar with the brass version of that lock. I hope it goes well for you.

    Incised carving

for cheap I would go on amazon and look up power grip carving tools. not that expensive and work well. get both u and v shape in 1.5mm and 3mm. my other incise carving tools are ramalson. incise carving is all about your ability to draw. I prefer hand push tools.

    Building 4 Bore Rifle #2

I am really excited to watch this series. still waiting to get my 8 bore barrel and make one of these crazy guns of my own. You mentioned to avoid curly maple but I am finding it hard to find a source that explains how much weaker a figured piece of wood is vs a straight grained one. But maybe...

    Educating Kids

many of the muskets from India do not have touch holes. might be a good option. but check with the school district to find out where they are comfortable drawing the line. even if it a non firing replica of a antique doesn't mean someone won't have an issue with it.

    To carve or not

only one way to tell. get the stock made. then draw all the carving that you want to do on it. take a few steps back and ask yourself does it look better or not. simple carving can add to a rifle even with highly figured wood.
