is .54 recoil notably worse than .50?

Not really, the .54 barrel will be a bit heavier and that will help compensate.

    Using mask while melting lead.

I cast a few times a year. Only when the weather is going to be clear. I cast in the middle of the back yard. I'll cast up a couple of hundred ball of various sizes. I don't wear a mask. I have had my blood checked for lead and there was none. All of the lead that I cast is used roofing...

Spit patching while wearing a mask

All I've ever used for patching my muzzleloaders is a spit patch, cut off at the muzzle. Went to a small shoot yesterday and found that spit patches and masks don't mix. So obviously I'm going to have to make some changes. (I hate change, that's why I shoot a flintlock :ghostly:) Anyway, I'm...

    Finally Got it!

I have a LePage in flint. Pedersoli recommends a .435 ball and a .010 patch over 24 grains of 3F. I tried that and it took a hammer to drive the ball down. I've gone to .433 ball and a .010 spit patch over 20 grains of 3F. Its still hard to load, but the gun shoots better than I do.

    What manufacturer

BTW, something to think about. If the gun has brass tacks on the left side of the stock and you have a beard, you may get a surprise when you shoot it. I bought a Bess that had been so decorated. After one shot pulled out a few hairs I quickly removed the tacks.

    best laid plans

A few months ago I took my new underhammer pistol to the range to work up a load. Turned out the gun would slip off of half **** and go off all by itself. I futzed with it a few times but couldn't make it work right. Finally got it back from a gunsmith on Friday. Going shooting today, I hope.

    How to Nap A Flint

If you are going to shoot your Bess much you might as well order a bunch of flints. I usually buy 100 at a time. The price for flints is always going up, so I look at it as an investment. With my Bess I get anywhere from 2 shots to 40 shots per flint. To knap my flints I simply tap the flint...

    Latest tomahawk project.

I enjoy seeing those hawks, but carrying one around is difficult.

Access Hertiage French 1733 Military Pistol

There are lots of threads on this site that will explain how to polish and speed up a flintlock mechanism. From what I can see in your photo this lock is a prime candidate for some judicious file work and polishing. Speeding a lock will improve it's function. It will also give you a chance to...

    Maximum Effective Range

Test it yourself. Put a tin can (not a lightweight soda can) at 25 yards and then shoot with your preferred load. If you can get a few pellets to hit the can and penetrate then you have a good load. Try it again at 30 and 40 yards.

Anyone use Olde Eynesford 1.5 FG?

I have used it in reloading brass shells for more modern rifles. I was not overly impressed with it as a muzzleloader component. Might as well use 2F

Supplies need for Beginner to Flintlock Rifles

I also recommend finding a local muzzleloading shooting club. The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA) publishes a list of all member organizations with contact information and dates. It can be very helpful to be around experience shooters when you are starting out.

    Japanese tower pistol replica stock?

I bought two of these pistols. I paid $25 for one and $10 for another. Both had been wallhangers and never fired. One had been on full **** for over 25 years. The metal parts inside the locks had never been hardened and the springs were toast. I had a bunch of spare Siler parts from other...

    Japanese tower pistol replica stock?

I have had two of those at one time. They require massive lock work to become functional. I wound up tossing most of the lock parts and using some odd parts that I had to eventually make them work. However, your question is how to fix the stocks. I have seen worse stocks repaired. First the...

    How low can I go?

The powder measure for my .54 rifle is double ended with different measures on both ends. One is 75 grains and the other is 55 grains. My rifle shoots to the same point of aim at 25 yards with either charge. I load with the smaller charge to save powder.

    Flintlock Snobbery

When people ask me about my Flintlock preference in shooting I just tell them that "If you can shoot a Flintlock offhand, you can shoot anything".

    The 1803 Flint Basher

I have seen Mike Lea fix some of them. They are not built to work as is.
