Restoring an extremely rare swivel-breech rifle from 1850. In desperate need of help, if anyone may be so kind! Bore is a wreck.

The epoxy -and the mashed nipples suggest to me that , at some fairly recent point ,someone's kids were fascinated by this gun, dry firing it. A parent wanted to prevent them from figuring out how to fire it.

Stuck ball, now with drill bit

Since two key issues with shooting the ball out are the ball not being seated and keeping the drill from damaging the bore, drill out the original dowel, deep enough to sleeve the whole drill ( if it's not already) and keep it centered; charge the breech through the thimble; push the ball down...

Restorations, what to look for, what to avoid

The hammers look new, at least; they've a slightly different profile.
  4. F

    Are you going to shoot??

There's a lot to be said for a low profile. I thought that you had to have a law enforcement connection to trace someone's name or address from their plates. Maybe get a non-shooting friend to drive you to the range & then pick you up, if you are worried about someone recording your plate..

    Would you

Shorten and recrown it to suite your needs and desires. Keep on shooting as long as you can.

All this was given to me as a gift from my brother.

No sibling rivalry here. Congratulation - on your brother and that kit!

    Nipples plugging

This is more of a "woods walk/trekking" technique but works well with my flintlock and doesn't require carrying a separate wiping/cleaning rod. Take a stout string/cord, a bit longer than your barrel, tie a loop in one end (I loop both ends); and double the loop over a cleaning patch. Using the...

    Thin Walled Brass Tubing

Might as well roll & solder; you'll need to form a mounting tab anyway.

    Nipples plugging

Reading through descriptions of this problem and suggested fixes has me agreeing with JCKelly; these cap-fired guns are an unreliable "improvement".

    My new/old horn and bag

Your friend is clearly not only a good friend but also a skilled horner. He did a beauiful job on the transformation. Nice bag, too, but the horn is stunning!

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

If it's really badly rusted/pitted, having the rifling freshened might be an option for you.

Does this seem right to you?

Other than bending a dogleg in the bar, to assure square contact with the trigger bar, trimming the trigger bar seems the most logical approach. (The trigger assembly is also likewly to be cheaper than a lock to replace, if you foul something up.)
  13. F

    Are you going to shoot??

Shoot, in moderation. Practice your hawk and knife skills. Pray that this shortage nonsense will ease as the effects of covid ease. In the long term, everything changes or passes

Stuck ball, now with drill bit

Waiting for the borescope is a good 1st stop. There's little point in guessing what's happened/ing with the drill bit and the bore/rifling. Trying any of the tried and true ways to free a stuck ball, without knowing exactly what you are up against, is courting damage (expensive) to the...

    Possible ring in barrel?

Chix2111, it'sa off the OP's issue, but what are the blocky marks, down the bore? Are they on the lands or the grooves? Is that tool chatter or something intentional? They look to me like either a ladder or a ratchetted track? Thanks.
  16. F

Why oh why do I ever go anywhere without a ramrod puller??

Thanks. I like the idea of a Prussic knot, but doubling and opposing them, so any tendency to exert lateral pressure would be balanced and cancelled. Adding cord to my kit tonight (shooting tomorrow).

    Crazy bidding on Gunbroker

Not much market for second hand TP guns, though.

    Yes or No on tacks

Unless you are trying for a decorated trade rifle look (which I'd also expect feathers, beads, and maybe braintan/rawhide wrap on), I think tacks look terrible. I bought my current rifle in spite of the tacks, which I eased out as soon as I'd confirmed, w/ the builder, that they weren't original.

    Info on under hammer action

I've always had a fondness for underhammers, part of a NE heritage, I guess. I also don't see why a skilled welder couldn't repair the damage. Condemning it as not worth fixing sounds to me like either someone who didn't like or understand the style. It's a bit blocky-it's detail work even a...
