Ease and accuracy of shooting. 1851 Navy vs 1858 Remington. Thoughts?

My second hand 1858 was developing a hair trigger due to a worn trigger. I took it apart, cleaned it up and stoned a new edge on the trigger. It doesn't shoot until I want it now and I am much happier. I'm not a target shooter.

Getting ready to shoot a matchlock as a newbie

I grind 3f in a morter for priming. A good hot hemp cord and away it goes. My pan isn't too large so I fill it. I will probably jinx myself by saying this, but I have had 100% sucess with my snaplock after much trial and error with a lever trigger. Same barrel but different lock.

    Practicing light load without ball?

A suggestion. A 7/16 dowell should fit down the bore but not go into the breech. Drop it in and mark it at the muzzle. Put a small charge down the barrel and check with the dowell. Keep increading the charge until the dowel doesn't go down to the mark. That will be the amount to just fill...

    Practicing light load without ball?

That nice puff of smoke in your basement will make the whole house smell like sulfur. Are you married???

Thanks for these thoughts. I have an 1858 and am considering a Colt companian to it.

    Leaving Rifle Loaded

On a caplock, I put a little piece of gasket material over the uncapped nipple and let the hammer down on it. And do something to cover the muzzle. Tape, balloon, etc. Everything sealed up tight.

    Pyrodex Shelf Life

I once shot up some that was in an old cardboard container with a plastic plug and a really low old price tag on it. Worked just fine. I don't dump out my smokeless powder when it gets a few years old, either. Just keep it dry.

    Leaving Rifle Loaded

The old powder cans were steel. They didn't corrode.

A simple tip from the work bench

Good idea. I hope I can remember it.

    Central India Matchlock

Don't think it was Corbet. Not that poetic and he used a big double rifle as I recall.

    Central India Matchlock

It takes a lot of nerve to hunt tigers with a matchlock. I personaly would be quite nervous tending my match while waiting for a charging tiger.

    Bacon & Co. pistol

You make good points. I guess I wouldn't shoot it either.

    Bacon & Co. pistol

It should fire reliably - that is a stout mainspring. Why not shoot it? I'm sure it is safe and a a few rounds wouldn't change that.

    Homemade 45 cal ?

It might be clunky but I kind of like it. I bet it's a good shooter. Have you checked to be sure it isn't loaded?

Cleaning parts of my latest shotgun

How about welding a long rod to an old twist drill and running it into the bore by hand? Use a drill bit that is way under bore diameter and make a bushing to keep the drill away from the barrel. That should be less likely to damage things than driving a spike into the barrels.

    Revolving Matchlocks

I think I have finally figured out how they were loaded. Move an empty chamber into firing position and load from the muzzle. Pretty simple if you don't get confused. They don't have ramrods attached because a servant loaded them before leaving the castle.

    Revolving Matchlocks

They must have worked - none of these are showing any damage. They all would be safer than supperposed charges in my non expert opinion. Those old guys were ingenious for sure.

    Revolving Matchlocks

I notice that the first one, with the pan covers, has provision for chain fires. The next ball up has an escape path. I think you are right about the other,- the charges have to be rammed into place before each fireing. Things could get real exciting in a hurry with any of these. I wonder how...

    Mag spark stuck

Can you cut a slot in it and use an impact driver? Before you try anything drastic, be sure to put the barrel in a padded vice. Just saying. Another thought - drill it a little bigger and use an easy out.

These are really nice. Shooting them not so much. Does a magnet stick?
