Unrelated but somewhat relevant is the reenactor procedure of pouring powder down the bore without ramming. A common procedure is to “tap” the butt after pouring the powder. I believe under the right conditions such as a humid day and heavily fouled bore you can have an off the powder powder...

Upgrade Jukar kit gun or buy different rifle?

That’s great. As far as the pan... That looks a little rough. Personally I would try to smooth that out with a rat tail or small rounded file. I woul not try to go deeper because of the side flat of the barrel. Dremels can be bad news. One slip......bad news. I’d just clean it up by hand.

    Diy shotgun

The solution is easy but you won’t like it. Save your money or sell stuff and get a real 12 gauge shotgun, Fowler....whatever. There’s no free pass unless a rich uncle kicks the bucket. You’ll wind up spending more money and wasting more time trying to convert a so-so rifle into a miserable...

I believe you reference a “chawed” or chewed ball. The chewed ball may have some basis in fact. Unless I see a good reference I’ll consider it a reenactorism. The story is American Indians would chew on a ball making it tighter in the bore. This allowed a bare ball to be loaded and not roll...

    Woodsrunner recap

It looks wonderful. The carving is very close to the original rifle.

Musket nipples fit on sporting type long guns?

It does not work as well as you think. The nipple may fit but the hammer????? Lots of issues can show up. If I were you I would consider a good flintlock.

Help Me Choose My First Trade Rifle Kit.

A Kibler Woodsrunner or Colonial would fit the criteria. The history of the Gulf Region is absolutely fascinating. Daniel Boone explored and considered settling in the Gulf region in the 1760s before he went through the Gap into Kentucky. Rebecca Boone absolutely refused. There is a rifle...

Re Finishing a Coated Trigger Guard

It is what it is. Enjoy it. Shoot it. Learn it. Cherish it. Clean it. Love it. Again it is what it is. The only way to make that rifle look like something from the 19th Century is help from Cinderella’s fairy godmother. Then it only lasts till midnight and at the stroke of 12 it’s back to...

True bare ball shooting (just powder and ball) in the18th Century is rather rare and was done in “special” circumstances. These circumstances include loading on the run or “quick shots”. Incidentally these accounts usually involve rifles. The two most famous being the exploits of Lewis...

Two vent holes?? Whats up here?

I have heard of this. Supposed faster ignition. Notice it’s a custom made liner.

TOW Hawken full stock plains rifle

I have had some experience with a true Hawken parts set. I cannot think of a worse first rifle or in other words, a Hawken is not a good starter rifle for a novice builder. A Leman or Lancaster type long rifle is a much simpler build for a new builder.

Upgrade Jukar kit gun or buy different rifle?

awreis, What you can do to improve your Jukar...... The flintlocks on these guns are “potluck”. Sometimes they can be very good. If the gun is a reliable shooter, I would leave it be. Trigger pull...... I would polish the lock internals. IE the tumbler and sear. These were cheap factory...

Upgrade Jukar kit gun or buy different rifle?

The short answer is, No, it’s not worth the time money and effort. Set triggers on one of these is a major job and may not turn out. This depends on skill set, tools and time. Here’s one thing to consider about a quality parts set let’s say an upgraded Kibler Woodsrunner Kit with the carved...

    Adding material to existing stock

They are very good, simple rifles in percussion. The CVA does have a clean out screw. Really the drum is plugged by that screw. It’s really not necessary to remove it for cleaning. Leman....... One fun thing to do is Leman stripes. Before finish, you can paint stripes on the stock with black...

    Help me choose a kit?

I hope you will find this interesting. This is not to do the internet one-up-manship or working class hero baloney or any condescending motivation like that. Rather my following comments are about build philosophy and methodology. I hope you find it interesting. A lot of what you mention...

Barrel Channel Issue on a New Stock

Get / make a brass punch or drift. Put the barrel on the vise and knock the lugs out. Tag them and bag them for replacement in the same slot. They’ll probably need be tweaked a little when you replace them on the barrel. A candle works fine. Get some glasses and an opti visor so you came...

    Adding material to existing stock

This has been done and it can look surprisingly good. Do not do this on a CVA/Traditions Kentucky!!!!!! There’s simply not enough wood there. The buttstock is way too thin even out of the box and the forestock is way too thick with a giant web. This makes the rifle slab sided even if you...
