As far as I remember, I never had any real problems with percussion locks. On the other hand, I can't say the same about some production flintlocks, some of them I even had to replace, including some Pedersoli on which it could be sometimes necessary to work too much for a hypothetical result...

Not cut, but changing the patch fabric for a tighter weave could be good: here the weaving is too loose, and the patch "could not be reused" (we never do, but we say that when the patch is good)...

For what it is worth and nothing more... I make all my springs (large or small) on six refractory bricks... I use a small oxygen/propane welding torch with disposable cans for forming (with also tongs, hammers, etc.). Furthermore, I heat the red steel like cherry very clearly and let it fall...

If the fault is on the lock plate do it with a small chisel for steel and if the default is on the spring do it with a small file... You can also make a spring for replacement with a piece of steel saw or strong clock spring (warm formed and not too hard tempered), it is really simple to do and...

IMHO, the problem is not only the caliber, but with a large caliber the hydrostatic shock is much greater since it is proportional to the caliber and velocity... So I think it's better to use a large caliber because if the bullet is not well-placed, the hydrostatic shock will do the job without...

It depends, for what is it, it is mostly good enough for hunting and frequently a bit baddest for target shooting at fifty yards and more... I don't think that it is very important to hunt with square or round patches and with more consequent loads than for target shooting...
