    Whitworth

If I may intrude, I’ve been having good results using half-inch thick felt wads cut with a 12mm round hole punch. I soak them in my lubricant of choice, and the hexagonal bore forms them into a good seal.

    NZ made target rifle.

Lovely piece! Congratulations. Sights and load development are a challenge. After 9 months I’m still tuning my Whitworth.

Why is everything out of stock??

I’m trying to find inserts for a Lyman 17 globe front sight. It seems the entire world is back ordered.

Options for raising the front sight?

Hi Kno-ie, good to hear from you. And thanks to everyone for your consideration. I just learned Lyman makes a tunnel front sight .854” high. That in conjunction with a Pedersoli sight riser base would get me close. No way will I cut into my barrel dovetail so I would be adjusting the new sight...

Options for raising the front sight?

Howdy, I hope everyone is doing well. I finally got the tang sight on my Whitworth. It’s an MVA midrange Sharps. It’s not really ideal for the stock profile but it‘s what I have for the time being. As I expected it would, it shoots high at 100 meters (very high..about 8 feet!) and the sight...

    Swabbing between shots

I‘ve come to suspect that the climate has an effect on bore fouling. A dry or humid environment makes a difference, as does the ball size, patching and lubricant. I push my ball down the barrel with a moist moose milk patch on the loading rod. It doesn’t add any more time to the loading...

I don’t mean to be dense, but I don’t understand the tombstone reference  ?

    Traditions Kentucky rifle flintlock ?

That was the first rifle I bought with my own money when I was 14, a CVA Kentucky flintlock .45 I didn’t have the artisanal skills to make it look very pretty, but the Spanish made barrel was a tack driver and I shot my first deer with it. Thats a great job with that rifle btw! Beautiful...

People overestimate how often percussion revolvers were reloaded...

There is an older thread on the forum somewhere about spare pre-loaded cylinders being carried for quick reloads. Interesting reading… However the same conclusion was arrived at here too… civilians just didn’t get into to the big gun fight situations that are portrayed on our screens. They were...

What is your favorite era of muzzleloading?

I like the 18th century flintlocks because I think it’s a blend of elegance and practical functionality. Lately I’ve come admire the Victorian precision target rifles such as the Volunteers, Whitworths, Rigbys etc

    Sighting in?

Hello my Brother. Pardon me for not acknowledging sooner. I like your name. The eighth man from Adam and the first Artificer in metals

    Sighting in?

Thank you for your wisdom. You make sense. ‘The reason I don’t like 6’oclock holding is I don’t know exactly where the ball will strike. I like putting the front sight on my intended point of impact. I believe I filed my front sight too low because I wasn’t clear-headed about the process. I...

    Musket caps

+1 to this. I put a #11 sized Enfield musket nipple on my Whitworth for a while until I found a supply of musket caps. It fired as reliably as ever.

    Sighting in?

I‘m an idiot! Yes I knew that! My head was up my 4th point of contact (airborne reference). Thank you for your clarification.

    Sighting in?

Thank you for the help. I meant to say that I prefer to centre hold instead of 6’oclock. When I centre hold at the moment I hit 4” high at 50 metres. So I should need to file down my front sight until it hits a couple inches high on instead of the 4” it currently is.

    Sighting in?

This is a convenient thread to latch onto. This morning I was checking my point of aim with my .45 round ball. 50 grains of fffg. I prefer to centre hold on everything but at 50 metres my centre hold was hitting about 4 inches high. In order to keep the hits in the black I had to use a 6’oclock...

Is sizing cylindrical bullets for a Whitworth redundant?

Hello, hope everyone is doing well. I currently fire hexagonal bullets in my Whitworth but I’ve bought a cylindrical mold and want to experiment with them. These cylindrical bullets are intended to be paper patched and have no grease grooves. My intention is push the cylindrical slugs through...

Patch/Cap box on a percussion rifle

Personally I’m thrilled that so many Travelers have greeted each other during this thread. Respectfully though, it’s about patch boxes. Courtesy to the original poster and the forum management
