Looking to restore a rifle gifted to my Grandfather

When I look at your rifle I'm puzzled. I own a H&A Minuteman; it's my second one. The first one was mine in the early 1970's. Both own that distinctive patchbox but neither had a two-piece stock. Your lock is entirely different and the barrels both had/have a drum and nipple, not a bolster and...

Glad you fixed your problem and that it was a simple fix.

Need help finding a solution for a heavy trigger

The full-cock notch on the tumbler looks to be very aggressive but unless you really know what you're doing I'd leave it alone. That machine screw with the spring on the shank that engages the full cock notch is there to adjust the relationship between the sear and the tumbler when the lock is...

    What is this?

Came across an interesting photo related to this thread. It's a photo of one of these pistols being fired around 1970 or so. My older brother is/was an amateur photographer. He had a camera that he could hold the shutter open manually. We picked a pitch black night, aligned everything, he held...

    Unknown flintlock muzzleloader

Just weighed mine - 8 pounds 14 ounces. And it's a .45 (.44 actually). I shot it with a younger man's eyes and arms. Knew of one in .36 caliber. Probably couldn't even shoulder that one today!

    What is this?

In regards to the above post - I do not believe the breech plug is tack welded; what you're seeing is how the tang is attached. I owned about six of these throughout the years, the first one was purchased from EMF back about 1970 or so. It cost 20.00 and that included shipping. Even back then...

Stainless steel set screw touch hole liners

Hi, flinter. Like you. I enjoy making the things that I use while enjoying our hobby. I think it's fun to make some of the bits and pieces that we use to make smoke. Yeah, I could purchase them but I like to tinker. And right now, at this point in time, there's ample time to do so. Have fun.

    Rehardening my frizzen

The last time the fellow posted who started this thread was over three weeks ago. He must have found a solution. I always find it both interesting and beneficial how, long after this happens, some threads take on a life of their own. There's always lots to learn here.

Thompson Center Cal 50 Kit barrels versus Thompson Center Hawken non-kit barrels.

I, too, have a kit-built TC hawken. I've always thought that they didn't put "Hawken" on because that was a model that was very specific and of which they were protective and proud. TC had no control over what happened to those kits after they were sold. Although many were turned into finely...

    Identification Anyone?

I bought one of these from EMF about 1970 or so. Cost was a few cents under $20.00 and that included shipping. Even then, that wasn't a lot of money. I am amazed by what they sell for today on that major national gun auction site. They certainly weren't junk but they could be a little "rough...

    Miroku Brown Bess; Busted

Just a thought - you have a very early Miroku Bess. The flattened triggerguard was never changed but the lack of sling swivels was corrected very early on. Thought I'd mention it.

    Why I don't worry....

Even if the barrel didn't fail under his "insult testing" process during the first seven or eight minutes of the video it could be weakened to the point that it will fail later under normal use.

    Abusing Our Heritage

If you clean it thoroughly with appropriate measures to stop further corrosion and deterioration then hang it on the wall you HAVE saved it.

    Unknown flintlock muzzleloader

Yup, A Hopkins & Allen Minuteman. I have one. Nominally a.45 caliber but actually a .44. I use a .433 ball. That star inlay on the cheekpiece is not factory but sure looks nice. Bought mine around '71 or '72.

what pan powder do you use?

I prime with whatever I am using for the main charge. So the Bess gets 2f, the others get 3f.

    Best barrel rust preventer ?

There are many products that work well. The best way to prevent rust in that bore is to make certain that it's absolutely clean and dry before you coat it with anything.

    Using Magnets to Retain Barrel
