What do you guys use to prevent rust in the inside of your barrels after it's cleaned ? I have been away from muzzleloading for a while. I've always used bore butter , but is there something out there now that's better ?

Well, just about anything is better than Bore Butter. They'll be lots of suggestions- but you will not find a product with better combined properties than a can of the liquid version of Birchwood Casey's Barricade. Inexpensive- 1 can will last most shooters 3 years. A single wet patch push slowly down the bore is all you need, it displaces moisture, it dries - so there are no issues with oil migration, and requires no wiping whatsoever when you resume shooting. If there are other products with all of the combined properties I would like to hear of them.

I have used barricade for years, after extended storage I get a very light and I mean a hard to see trace of red on the first dry patch I put down the bore, almost nothing but I don't like to see it.

Having heard the praises of Mobile one synthetic oil for a rust preventive I have given it a try lately.

Applied to any clean dry barrel many commercial gun oils will protect your barrel I use Barricade and have had no Issues. After thoroughly cleaning, drying and oiling your gun get it out of the safe after a few days and run a lightly lubricated patch to check for any signs of rust and give it a quick visual inspection. If you don't find anything just get it out once a month when not shooting regularly and do the same. I am a big believer in an ounce of prevention theory.

I do not recommend bore butter, however I have a rifle (musket) that was Iast shot over 15 years ago and cleaned it with BB at the end. In a check as its up for sale I ran a patch down and ZERO color. As it does harden I went ahead a cleaned it again to make sure and ZERO patches came back with any color. I do however live at 7000K and average humidity under 20? As per above the best bet is CLEAN and DRY before you oil with what ever you use. I now use Barricade, used to use 3-1 and WD-40 and in this environment never a rust issue.

Whatever you use, I think the most important thing is to wait a couple of days after a complete cleaning, and then run a couple patches down the bore to check for any discoloration, and then apply, or reapply your product of choice.

Maybe it's changed in the last year or so but, Barricade isn't available in California.
It seems Birchwood Casey for some reason refused to put the California cancer warning on their Barricade label so California wont let it be sold in that state. At least, that's what I've been told.

As for me, I use Barricade and agree with the others. It is a petroleum product but it drys into a awesome coating of rust protection that doesn't need to be cleaned out before loading and shooting the gun. The dry coating does not combine with black powder fouling to make hard fouling like regular petroleum oils can.

+1 for Diligence !

Barricade is very good

Too many firearm owners have expected a product or products to work after a single application only to find at their horror that they "missed a spot". Our equipment takes sooo much of our hard earned coin that we owe it to ourselves to double check, and even triple check.

Which reminds me.........

I had always used Lehigh Valley lube. I understand that it is no longer available. there were occasions when I could not clean my Pedersoli flintlock for a few days after shooting it and never had a problem.

I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil on all my firearms for decades. After I clean the bore, I blow the water out with compressed air, with the nipple removed, and coat the inside of the barrel with Mobil 1. I'll often run patches through the barrel the next day to remove anything I might have missed on range day, then add another coat of Mobil 1.

I store the rifle with the nipple removed and a patch between the hammer and nipple hole. I clean the barrel thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol before heading to the range. The bores on my muzzle loaders are shiny and they shoot well.

Do you thoroughly clean it out before shooting again?
Regardless of what I use..., whether I cleaned and WD-40'd the barrel when going to shoot the following day, or if I was at some event and didn't have the WD-40 or Barricade and used sweet oil (olive oil), or if I used Barricade or something else and let the rifle or musket sit for a while..., I always run a dry patch, followed by a damp patch and then several dry patches down the bore before shooting. Never had any problems with anything I used as "preventative".
