    How clean is your bore?

I have not had any corrosion using hot soapy water with a tight patch, clear water rinse, WD patch to displace any remaining moisture, dry patch and a Gunzilla patch to protect the bore. In the field I would clean with spit patches and several tight Gunzilla patches.

That is what I have always thought the notch was for.

Is There Any Of You Guys That Use Vintage Tools When Building ML.

Do my beat up 74 year old scare tissue covered hands count as vintage tools ? 😄

    Uberti pock mark in frame

Yeah, that's a doozy of a void thinking on it some more as it is actually above the chimney channel in the frame cheek where it should be solid steel. It's still not any where that would be a strength issue though.

    Track of the Wolf

Just get a bench grinder green wheel from Grainger for sharpening carbide tools and grind the hump off. Keep a bowl of water handy for dipping them so they stay cool and don't get hot enough to crack on you. I do it with bare fingers so I have to keep dipping them as they get hot. Wear a dust mask!

    Flints?

With the price increase and availability of percussion caps now days I'm liking my flint guns better all the time ! I like and use the left over flat flakes from my point making chert slabs I have purchased. I much prefer them to the humpback, core struck flints, that all the vendors sell...

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

Truth is after 30-32 inches the weight and length of a longer barrel are not really a practical velocity, power, sighting and handling advantage with Black Powder and patched ball.

    Strange day at the range

I keep threatening to make a check list to back up my memory but admitting the obvious need is hard to except after assuming it not being useful for so long. Truth be known a check list was/is always a good idea no matter how good ones memory at any stage of life.

What has more effect on POI, muzzle velocity or recoil.

I posed the question realizing it is a multifaceted one and would require a number of pertinent answers. I always start with load development to find a consistently accurate load capable of the distance and accuracy requirement needed and once the groups are equal to the task start the...

    1851 Grip Question

Your post made me curious as I remember my 80's 1860 Pietta as having the most comfortable grip of any of my percussion revolvers so I compared the 51, 60 and Walker that I had handy and the 60 feels better in my hand by far than the rest. The 51 is really quite small even for my medium sized...

    Uberti pock mark in frame

Well they are largely milled/shaped from solid stock but this is an investment casting rather than the original forged billet. The investment cast allows very precise dimension tolerances negating the need for many milling and shaping operations of the past. The dimension specs of the internal...

    Uberti pock mark in frame

It could have just been left over slag, or mill filings filling it but was commenting on what the original post said of it being filled and found when picking at the pock. The issue to the owner is that it was there in the first place not wither or not it was purposely filled to cover it up...

    Uberti pock mark in frame

No, the pock mark is indicative of a minor casting flaw that was milled into and this one has what looks like a small crack emanating from it. None of my revolvers have them. It's not a danger but looks terrible and was possibly the reason it was filled.

    Uberti pock mark in frame

Yes, they are investment cast (lost wax method in ceramic molds) and then milled/shape'er cut to spec. Original Colt frames were forged into billets then milled/shaped , soft fit (assembled ), with files, case hardened and final fit with stones and emery cloth. There is always some amount of...

    .36 vs. .44 "Stopping Power"

I've lived and hunted AK every year but two for over five decades, all in brown/grizzly country, killed 6 black bear and was present when two brown bear were taken. They all carried on with lethal hits long enough to end me had they closed and gotten the chance. The only one I ever saw drop...

    .36 vs. .44 "Stopping Power"

I've read the grizzly guns were almost always Walker's with max loads shot from horse back. The Mexicans made great sport of gang lassoing them from horse back and finishing them off with hand guns. I can imagine a pissed off grizzly winding up a single rider from his lariat rope if not...

    Uberti pock mark in frame

Are you going to send it back? It's a casting inclusion usually found internally when magnafluxed or X-ray-ed. I've only encountered it once in a single shot 45 cal barrel of 4140 alloy. These percussion gun frames are usually made of 8620 alloy. I doubt it will ever cause trouble mechanically...

What has more effect on POI, muzzle velocity or recoil.

Well once the range gets out their several hundred yards you can't consistently hit anything without accounting for and compensating for all those factors. Elmer Keith proved accurate long range hand gun shooting is possible when these factors are adjusted for.

    Testing .44 Caliber Stepped Chambers

It's easy work to make a new ram for a specific bullet nose profile if you have access to a lathe or even a drill press and bench grinder. Truth is a hemisphere will do them all if the bullet is sized correctly. I do shoot antimony hardened conicals as a rule and use pure lead for the balls so...

Should conical shave lead at seating ?

I have noted in cartridge guns that to much chamber mouth chamfer encouraged and increased lateral gas escapement and increased gas cutting of the top strap although not an issue for open frame guns. Lead spitting is from misaligned chamber to barrels and/or forcing cone profile and not gap...
